    Lessons in Gun Control

From "Governing" magazine sent gratis to government employees:

Lessons in Gun Control from Australia and Brazil
A recent book outlines other countries’ approaches to gun control that have significantly reduced violence. Should states look to these places as a model for gun laws?

The other side never sleeps and never relents. Knowledge is power; know what their mindset is.

Brazil as a model for reducing gun violence? Has the author been asleep when the news about the violence in Rio is all over the headlines?

The only place I consider gun control is successfull to reduce firearm related crimes, is Japan. However japanese have different culture and behavior. Their method won't work for American. Gun ownership is privilege, not right in Japan.

I was TDY in Japan in 1995 for a month. I caught two stories of gun violence in that time and one fatal stabbing. I didn't watch the TV news every night. Extremely low by say, NY standards, but still not a violence free paradise. The guns belonged to the local gangsters and the images shown were Ruger Mk1 .22 pistols.

Same old. Guns are the reason violence exists, so we should limit accessibility to guns, while pretending that we are not tinkering with accessibility since that would violate civil rights.

All "gun control" measures in the USA are exclusively about limiting accessibility by law abiding, which in turn is designed to reduce the number of guns in the society, while pretending that the reduced access is only a byproduct, not the original intent.

That's the same mechanism that anti-abortion legislators are trying. Limit access by pretending it's about safety (only looking at the legislative/legal framework, not starting a discussion.) We need to keep on going to courts and closing the doors on these types of approaches by exposing them for what they are - a mechanism to minimize access to guns by law abiding in hopes of reducing the number of guns in public hands.

            The Japanese

Yes... I agree with your assessment. When I went there, I was amazed as to the homogeneity of their culture. The Japanese take great pride in the fact that the vast overwhelming majority of the people are from one tribe ... the Yamato tribe.

They are polite to outsiders ... especially the Gaijin. Once I was asked what nationality I am ... I told them that I am a Sansei, (3rd generation Japanese). Then, I was asked about the nationality of my parents... My Mom is Issei, (native born), and my Father is Nissei, (2nd generation). After telling them this ... they quickly warmed up to me ... I was told that this is because I am Japanese. I suppose what was implied is something to the effect of pure-blood Yamato tribe....

            Sheesh!

I can say this much for sure. I really liked visiting Japan ... I much prefer living here in California ... even if it is a bit restrictive on 2A.

In Japan ... they have strict regulations on ALL weaponry type things ... at least this is what I was told when I was there.

What a lie. The "country down under" has had a great increase of crime since the ban went into effect.
Canada stopped with the registery of all guns as it was a huge cost and it did not help one bit.
Then again since when has huge costs and no results stopped your pres/congress from doing anything ----

England and Australia have both seen an increase in firearms related and other violent crimes since they enacted their draconian gun control laws. Mexico bans the ownership of firearms with all but a very few exceptions - how's their firearms violence going?

The only thing gun control does is disarm the law-abiding.

The streets in Japan are very safe.

However ... it is like a monoculture there. It was funny ... folks coming up to me and asking questions in Japanese... Then, when the subway train entered a tunnel, and I looked at the reflection ... I said to myself ... "They all look just like me!" ... or maybe it is ... I look just like them!

                    Yikes!

All "safe" countries are monocultures and they have very strong exclusivity against anyone who is different. That's the only way to have a local, community based system where potential perpetrators are detected early and dealt with by the community.

If our most violent communities (ghettos) took responsibility for what's going on around them, we'd have much less crime too. Instead, we have the "no snitching" mentality and complete lack of accountability, perpetuated by the political exploitation.

I have no problem if people want social engineering to try to fix the system. All I'm asking is to be able to defend myself against failures of those experiments.

My SIL adopted two girls from China. She is Caucasian. A couple years ago they went to China to familiarize the girls with their birth culture. Both girls speak Chinese but the locals pegged them as Americans even before they spoke. The girls just carried themselves differently than the locals. My SIL said to her daughters that she felt conspicuous as the only Caucasian to be seen and that people were always staring at her. The girls said to her, now you know how we feel! they live in a small town in central Pa. The girls felt comfortable in the crowds in China but thought China itself sucked. They do like SoCal however as they see more people who look like them here.
