When do you stop cleaning the bore?

cleaning? whats cleaning? seriously though the only gun i really scrub is my 10/22. everything else gets a few patches and that's it. when i first got into guns i would obsessively clean them, but now i know a little dirt wont hurt.

I don't really like to put my guns away dirty... just OCD on my part. I clean every time I shoot but not spotless, just get the main crap off and call it a day.

Lol, 10/22 is the only one I hardly ever clean. Maybe every 1500-2000 rnds.

Use a Bore snake at the range, while the barrel is still warm. It'll save patches later on when you do a proper cleaning.

Wait until you all shoot a BP Muzzleloader and have to clean it! Those patches come out filthy!

For my modern firearms, (hand gun and shotgun) I inspect them after every shooting trip. I run a patch with CLP down the barrel (from the receiver end). I stop when the last patch isn't significantly better than the previous one. I send a dry one down just to make sure it's clean. Then I send one with some oil on it for protection. I'm normally done after about 4 patches. Then the action gets cleaned.

My muzzleloading rifles are a different story. Big bucket of hot, soapy water for those bad boys!

When it's "good enough", I am not going to sit there and clean for hours.

the only time I clean after each range session is if I use corrosive ammo, other than that, it's when I think about it.

if im not mistaken most jags,brushes will give a false positive to copper fouling.

As far as my cleaning regiment over 40-50 rounds i will throw a patch of powder solvent down the tube (just one) let it soak then hit it with a dry patch and good to go. Still waiting on the groups to open up on the lapua, 140 rounds in and still doing well.

i would never buy a used gun that was not cleaned very often. If i open the receiver and it is bone dry inside i pass.

I clean my Mosin once a week. I think someone's been taking it out of the safe and shooting it while I'm at work. Its always dirty

Corrosive ammo means immediate cleaning, no exceptions. Other guns get a visual inspection; If they're fouled up and nasty they get cleaned, if they're acceptable (the rifling is still very crisply visible) they get cleaned next trip. Over that the whole collection gets a complete going-through every couple of months, but that's part keeping the old ones that have had their finishes worn off de-rusted and part because I am addicted to my firearms. As to when I stop? Corrosive ammo means it will be a purely cleaned patch, everything else I stop when I reach the point of diminishing returns and cant see much of a difference between two or three in succession.

Really? I have never cleaned the AK pistol I built about 5 years ago and ONLY shoot Corrosive ammo through it. Occasionally, I inspect it and have yet to find any signs of rust. Yes, I'm doing this as an experiment and don't shoot it that much anymore but, still, no signs of corrosion after 5 years of Yugo ammo.

How the hell would you know if it was only cleaned one time (just before you looked at it) in it's entire life? As far as being "bone dry" goes, if it is, it was CLEANED just not lubed afterwards. That doesn't mean that the previous owner shot it that way. It just means that it has not been lubed yet. You can do what you want and, I prefer you keep leaving those good guns on the racks for me to buy at cheap prices.

ive never seen a completely clean patch myself either. I clean every couple of range trips, but with carry guns, I will clean once a month no matter if I shot it or not. These are maintenance cleanings though, just quick wipedown and one or 2 runs with a patch. I only use a brush when absolutely necessary.

I didn't read all the previous post because of all the weird posts about why you clean and when. I scrolled down to the bottom and saw this post which is what my question is based on.

Are you putting clean patches on the dirty brush?

If yes, there are no further questions needed.
