Where do you buy your ammo?

I buy a lot of .40cal from walmart but I normally buy rifle ammo in bulk online.

Actually I buy from all three sources. Depends on the price, the store's service and convenience for the day's activities. Gun stores may not have the best price, but, offer the best eye candy. Mail order has good pricing for larger purchases, and Wal Mart has the best price, least variety, and worst service (even Big 5 has better service).

I was wondering about that when the fires were nearby here and I was packing a bag. What do they do if there is a bunch of ammo in a house and they do not know about it?

Ammunition will not explode or burst in a fire. This has been tested many times with the same conclusions. Unless a round of ammunition is in the chamber of a firearm, there is very little danger, if any. The 20# tank of propane in your garage is more deadly than 10,000 rounds of loaded ammunition. The small tank of LP can take out an entire fire truck company.

The NRA did a test in the 40's. Threw everything from rimfire to '06 to 50BMG cartridges in a big *** bonfire and stood about 15ft away. They popped and sizzled but never exploded. The bullets popped out of the casing put that was it.

The only thing driving the bullet in a fire is whatever energy is behind it in the case. Since there is nothing around the cartridge to contain and direct the pressure, it doesn't have the effect of being fired in a gun. This is the main principle of how ammunition works.

Take a bolt action rifle. Take the barrel off. Put a cartridge in the boltface and close the bolt. The cartridge will be out of the receiver where the chamber should be, nothing containing the pressure caused by burning the gun powder, except the case and neck tension on the bullet. Pull the trigger (FP strikes the primer, powder ignites, etc). The bullet will leave the casing and might peter about some distance, without much force if any.

When smokeless powder is used in cartridges, it's a propellant. When it is used in quantity, it's an accelerator.
