    Need More Room?

A buddy of mine saw this somewhere and came up with his own. Some velcro, plywood squares, and wood dowels.

At first, I thought that the rifles were holding up the ledge. Now, I realize that the dowels and velcro just keep the rifles from leaning upon one-another. Ingenious.

Aren't the wood dowels gonna scratch up the inside of the barrels? Or possibly soak up the solvents/oils left over from cleaning? How far into the barrel are the dowels?

Brilliant idea BTW - Kudos to your buddy!

I would be worried about the raw wood attracting moisture to the bore of your rifles more than any scratching. Some plastic rods might be a better choice.

He used brass rods for the smaller bores, and they only go in an inch or two.

Why would wooden dowels be any worse than, say, a peice of metal friction-fitted to the bore traveling through it at 2000-3000fps?

The only real issue with wood that I would be wary of is the hygroscopic nature. But that can be easily remedied with an oil finish on the dowels. Or just replace them with brass/copper/aluminum or a decent solvent-resistant plastic like delrin.

Because of what can happen over weeks and months. It could collect gunk and become acidic, and of course attract moisture. I like the idea, and agree it should be another material like a form of plastic.

Golden Rods for moisture control. I wouldn't think it would do anymore to the bore than the stock does on the outside. Most pistol racks for safes use the wood dowels.
