I guess the only thing to get from this is to mention this, and the other ND shootings (elderly war vet in Modesto, dude who shot his leg and calf cleaning, PD chief, Iggy, glock fotay, etc) when discussing safety with new shooters..and reminding vet shooters..and it reminds me that it seriously DOES HAPPEN to the best of us.

I think adopting the policy that YOU WILL ND IN YOUR LIFETIME! is a good idea because then you will behave like it's going to happen every time you handle your firearm. Period. Assuming the gun is always loaded obviously isn't good enough. Maybe rule #1 should be changed to "Assume you'll ND and kill your loved ones, and 3 kittens when you handle your gun which is loaded RIGHT NOW even though you checked it 3 times!!" I can see myself now with this new mindset..."Honey, take the kids and go to the park, I'm removing my gun from the safe and I'm going to put it in my range bag to go to the range..since I'll likely shoot it by accident, I want you out of the house..." lol

That sucks, I feel bad for the guy. I am of the opinion (controversial as it may be) that most gun owners who handle their guns regularly will have an ND. Just like if you drive a car sooner or later you will have an accident. Not following the rules will almost certainly make it worse. If you follow the gun safety rules to the letter an ND will never happen, but we are all human. Hopefully you follow at least one of them at any given time, and no one gets killed when you have your ND. But really, any ND can result in a death.

ETA: unlike with a car accident, you will only have ONE ND. After that, well, you are just more careful.

That's a tragedy. I feel terrible for her family. And this guy will wear the shame and guilt for the rest of his life. A worst nightmare scenario for any gun owner.

Jeff Cooper once shout a hole through his neighbor's gas meter, while showing a gun journalist a classic revolver he had - he forgot to remove one round when unloading it, and was testing the action while "aimed in a safe place" when dry firing it for the journalist. Some time later, the journalist had the gas meter gold-plated and presented it to Jeff Cooper at an awards banquet. True story.

Yes, THAT Jeff Cooper. He even worte about it at one point, reminding that "the best of us" can have an ND.

I just saw that article on Fox News. Very sad.

I handle firearms on a fairly regular basis and I check, double check and triple check to ensure it's not loaded before I store / hand it over to someone. The people I go shoot with say I tend overdue it because you can clear a firearm with me watching, hand it over to me and I immediately check to see if it's clear myself.

I suppose I have that mind set due to firearm safety drilled into my head when I first started shooting and having to attend funerals of friends (yep, plural) who have died because of a ND.

Sorry, but "it happens to everybody" ain't true. There's no excuse for this. Period. Sure, NDs might happen to everybody, but doing so into your GF's abdomen at point blank range sure as hell won't. Come on. Following rules number 1 and 2 would have prevented this.

I honestly think a lot of people who buy/handle guns have no clue what they're doing. Sometimes Im at the range and I notice people rent guns and go out on the range and they're basically on their own.

I usually help them because they tend to stand around nervously fidgeting with the gun. I dont want to get "accidentally" shot because some newbie on the range didnt know wtf he/she was doing.

Averyell Davis discharged his pistol, killing her, Jefferson Parish Sheriff's deputies said.

Deputies said 23-year-old Averyell Davis was shot in the abdomen Monday night.

Sheriff's spokesman Col. John Fortunato said Curtis C. Murray has been arrested and booked with one count of negligent homicide.

The couple was in the living room of their home in Gretna when the gun discharged, Fortunato said.

He says Davis told first responders that her boyfriend accidentally shot her, Fortunato said.

Davis died shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Very sad. definitely is a good reminder, as everyone has said, to ALWAYS follow the rules of safe gun handling. As Crazed SS said, there are a lot of people that go to ranges and rent guns without the slightest idea of what they're doing.

Last time I was out at the Prado trap range there were 2 guys each with their sons. All 4 were absolutely clueless. One of the boys (probably around 13) stepped up to the line and couldn't get the voice activation to work so he turns around with a loaded 12ga. basically pointing it at everyone on the range next to, and behind him (myself included since I was on the shooting line at the range next to him). Everyone was yelling at him and he didn't know what was going on and then it finally clicked and he just laughed about it.

People just don't understand how serious this is until their finger slips and puts someone on the ground. My condolences to the girl's family. Definitely something that should have never happened.
