My latest project... Arty shell crate gun case!

Thought some of you would enjoy seeing this. I found a 105mm artillery shell crate at my local army-navy store, going to turn it into a gun case/crate. Inside dimensions are 42" long x 12.5" wide x 6" deep, perfect for a standard length AK, which I will be setting it up for. Lining it with 3/8" Plywood, sealing with caulk, and building wooden rests covered in felt to support the rifle.

I'm going to model it after the MP40 crate (bottom picture) with spots for magazines, slings, and accessories. I'm going to try to keep some of the original markings, but I may put some Russian Cyrillic here and there. I'll post pictures of my progress periodically. Enjoy!

Cool! Can't wait until you're done with it.

        Nice idea.

BTW, that's not technically an artillery shell case.

That's a case for armor piercing 105mm tank shells, like what the original M1 or M60 tanks fired. APFSDS stands for "Armor Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot." Be interesting to see if the crate would make a geiger counter tickle, since most APFSDS were made with depleted uranium.

Wow. That's pretty awesome. Anyone have a geiger counter!?

you would get more rads from getting an Xray than you would from holding a APFSDS round. The only time it is an issue is after the round hits a target and microscopic particles of depleted uranium are breathed.
