Good gunshops around Palm Springs, CA?

Hello all. My mothers birthday is coming up in less than a month and I think I have decided to buy her her first handgun (9mm more than likely) for her. She bought a house in Twentynine Palms about 10 years ago to live in while she commutes back and forth to Palm Springs as a nursing administrator. I figure that since she lives alone, she definitely needs some protection, as that place has gone downhill more and more over the years. Im thinking that when I go to visit her for her birthday, I will take her to a shop in the Palm Springs area to get her HSC (getting her to "study" for it may be an easy giveaway) and pick out a handgun. Any of you have any recommendations for a nice shop in the area? Thanks in advance.

I don't have any shops to suggest but you should read up on "Straw Purchases". Buying a gift for your mother is completely legal. Unfortunately there are stories of CalGunners being accused of trying to make a straw purchase and the gun store has refused to go through with the deal. So I think it would be best to know about them before you enter the store and may be questioned on your purchase.

I always thought of Palm Springs as one of the towns in Cali where I'd least need protection! She needs a good handgun, though, for sheer fun!!!

If she's in twenty nine palms I would go to Bear Arms in Yucca Valley. I was actually just there today. They have a really good selection and surprisingly good prices. Everyone inside is very helpful as well.

I second the Second Amendment store. They have a huge selection and have good sales reps.

Thanks for all of the suggestions everyone. That range/shop in Palm Desert looks really nice... even if I dont purchase from there, id like to check it out.

I saw a Facebook page for "Bear Arms" in Yucca Valley, but figured there wouldnt be any good gunshops in the local area (I grew up in Twentynine Palms) so I was just going to head down the hill to figure something out. Perhaps ill stop by here and see how it is as well.

Funny, I have just the opposite impression of the place. Whenever I visited they had a very limited and definitely overpriced inventory. $900 SKSs, etc.

Had Rock Island 1911s priced $300 more than mail order and $100 more then what I could buy the same one for at Turner's. And Turner's isn't exactly none as a place for screaming deals.

There's a new gun shop in Yucca called Independence Guns and Ammo. Small inventory but he will order anything you want and gives a fair price. What he quotes is the out-the-door-price with tax/dros included so don't freak out.

The owner works with me on the Base and the shop is a second job for him so it's only open on his days off. Monday and Saturday 10:00 to 18:00 both days.

Yellow Mart is still owned by the same family. They were offered a killer deal to buy their Yucca Valley building, so the dad retired and his son Mark that was running the Yucca store took over in Indio.

OP if your mom isn't very familiar with guns you should take her to the Shooting Sports Fair put on by Turner's at Raahauge's in Corona. It's the weekend of May 30th - June 1st.

She can get a feel for and actually shoot many brands/types of pistols there for a very minimal charge.

Stay away from bear arms. They are way overpriced. For example a few months ago I was looking at the Walther P22 for my girls. Bear arms was asking roughly 485, over $100 more than 2nd amendment down the hill in indio. And that was before tax and DROS. As steve said, Independence is good to go. For example he charges $60 for out of state transfers. That might only seem ok till you find out that is including tax and DROS.
