    Handguns vs. Rifle

With the clock ticking on both SSE and low-key long gun registration, I am conflicted as to where I should allocate my savings. More off roster handguns or my first rifle?

I bought my first firearm near the end of January this year. I currently have three handguns, two of which are off roster. There are at least 3 more off roster handguns I hope to acquire before SSE is no longer an option.

I have never owned a long gun and have no experience with them. New registration laws coming January 2015 makes purchasing a rifle this year enticing.

Off roster handguns only be available through private party transfers in 2015 while long guns will have new registration laws in 2015. Off roster handguns I buy this year will be more expensive and much harder to find next year while long guns will just require more registration info documentation/fees. and What are your thoughts Calgunners? Where should I put my money?

Imho there are still plenty of decent handguns staying on the roster. Diversify and get a long gun or 2 that suits your needs. An affordable pump shotgun is always a good first, ie Mossberg 590 or Remington 870. They run like a truck and can do several different jobs.

    just my 2 cents

SSE might possibly go away, but we haven't lost the fight yet.

With some manufactures not renewing some of their on roster handguns we can expect a shortage in the future. Considering both of these scenarios I would focus on handguns at this time.

Maybe buy a couple of AR striped lowers and throw them in the safe.

Think of buying off roster, in demand handguns as a savings account. If the worse laws and restrictions happens, you can still sell these assets.

Things are calm now. Just wait for the next big Frenzy concerning our gun rights when H. Clinton takes charge.

JMO . Your mileage may vary my friend.

PS. EDIT. Rifle/ shotgun registration already started in 2014. And these Proposed laws haven't been decided......yet.

Fewer people are killed with all rifles each year (323 in 2011) than with shotguns (356), hammers and clubs (496), and hands and feet (728).

As stated above, long gun reg started this year. If that's your only concern about long guns, then you are a bit late.

However, since you have no long guns right now, I would recommend getting one this year. Plenty of AR's in the marketplace right now that are not selling because owners are dumping them. Snag one up for a good price. Gotta have at least one.

          Good luck!

get a long gun and try it out, if you don't like it, you can always sell it for another handgun, long guns are fun!

What new reg laws are there for 2015? AFAIK you'll have to take a test and obtain a firearms cert but that's it. Same process as a HSC essentially.

Let's assume that the roster does eventually fall. That could be years from now and SSE is likely to go away in 2015. In the meanwhile you can capitalize on this by getting desired models and selling them via PPT and making a good profit. It could allow you to purchase better long guns than you might currently be able to buy.

Firearms market seems prone to hysteria so people will clamor for things they cannot readily obtain and thus drive prices through the roof. You could make a good profit off this. Conversely, 2015 could see a panic buying of long guns but I think that's more likely to occur in the 2016 election year.

IMO, SSE what you can now in case a law is passed making it go away after Dec 31. With that in mind, some places I've spoken to who do SSE now have said they will stop doing it in Nov.... if the law is going to get passed. So you don't have until 12/31, but rather until Oct or Nov for some or most places.

In the meantime, pick up as many long guns as you can since they are not privy to the 1-in-30 day rule, since you never know what crazy "AW" law will come up later this year, or what 'mass shooting' will take place that causes the media to go nuts and making the price of rifles & receivers go up (again).

The only new law concerning long guns that I'm aware of coming about is SB808 regarding "ghost guns".

Recommended way to go: buy an AR cheap, strip it at the FFL and leave only the lower receiver ( which will be registered) and (to much work to remove). Buy an 80% lower and mill it out making your own lower receiver. Sell the registered lower receiver.

Congrats, you now have one of the few legal types of unregistered firearms you can come into possession of in California post-2013.

If nothing else, buy one of these jigs and some lowers from here and stash them away.

Personally, my money is on SSE'ing everything on my list before fall, as the rush will be on by Sept once the new SSE law is signed. Brown said he'd sign it, just not with the PPT limits it had last year.

To be honest, you don't really have to bother with buying a complete rifle to begin with if you are doing the 80% route. You could just buy the upper and lower parts kit + buffer/stock/grip etc and have them shipped to you directly, or one of those cheap PSA kits if you want a decent budget shooter.

True, but as some else in this thread pointed out, people are selling ARs for less than I can buy the parts. YMMV.

With this administration being in office since 2008, I'm amazed people are just now getting into guns. We've all had plenty of warning. But, better late than never.
