Most cities have laws against discharging pellet guns, bows, paintball guns, potato guns, air soft etc.

I know someone who had a few cop cars show up and one officer jumped the fence and let the others in the yard. There were adults shooting a pellet gun in the back yard, no kids present.

This is not entirely a true statement. Many cities outlaw the discharge of any firearms within cities this includes air rifles as well.

My statement is entirely true. I did not comment on WHERE and WHEN you could actually hunt squirrels. There is a season and of course you must hunt where it is allowed.

The guy was an idiot to shoot squirrels in his front yard, yet alone with a firearm.

This is how I've been saying that boycotting AW registrations work to the anti's advantage. You literally give them the opportunity to pick you off one at a time in random LEO encounters, and because each case becomes a one off incident, they individually never will stir up the people to fight back. Make them come for the whole lot of registered guns at once, and we can fight back.

Dude shoots a small animal, gets himself a LEO contact that may on its own have amounted to nothing, but during their investigation come across the "illegal" assault weapon, and then the book is thrown at him with one more gun on its way to be eventually melted down.

Unless the guy had them laying out in plain sight (IE: he had them locked up in a safe or even behind a closed door), then what the cops did was totally illegal, unjustified, and violates the 4th. Problem is, a lot of this is conjecture, since we just don't have the needed information at this point to formulate a solid opinion; we're relying on very little actual fact/information at this point.

Going out of their way to enforce it....even if the firearm was laying out in plain sight, they would still have to have ran the serial #, checked if the magazines were registered, if they were "high capacity", etc. Wouldn't that fall under going out of their way, or does that fall under standard investigation? Unless the guy was using that particular rifle to fire at the squirrel, they really had no justification for taking it (same as a home, self-defense shooting, they'd only take the pistol, not anything else I might have).

Let me see if I understand this correctly.

Guy has non registered rifles in his house.
Guy has illegal capacity magazines in his house.
Guy then decides to hunt squirrels.
Guy picks outside in front of his house as the best place to hunt said squirrels.
Cops hear shots and show up.
Cops search him and house and find said contraband and dead squirrels.

                Did I miss anything . . .

Now putting aside the fact per the Constitution he as every right to all those activities, the current laws do in fact restrict some of those activities and those items in his house.

If it were me, I restrict my activities which would draw attention to other activities that may not be currently full tolerated under the current laws.

Get some squirrel bate and keep the guns in a safe.

This is not door-to-door confiscation . . . this is confiscation from an individual that drew unnecessary attention to himself.

Pretty much summed it up right.

But does it really matter if it's door-to-door confiscation or not? Confiscation is still confiscation, regardless of the method. End result is still the same: you lose your property without due process AND your freedom (convicted felon) for merely owning property.

Again, what I really want to know is the circumstances behind the cops going into his house and finding the rifle/magazines. Was a search warrant involved? We already know that the gun he used to shoot the squirrels with was NOT the "assault rifle" they took.

If your guns are legal, and your mags a legal and you don't shoot squirrels in you front yard you should be OK.

Things like this happen whether there are guns involved or not. Not saying it's right but when you enage in an activity that has the potential to draw unnessasary attention to yourself, then you need to be ready for the "attention".

Hmmm - My thinking initially was that his front yard may be big enough that the neighbors were far enough away no one would notice.. A quick Google maps of the address shows that he NEVER should have been shooting in his front yard.

And I do agree with what was already mentioned. Why did he consent to a search that would enable LE to find his unregistered weapon?

I'm quite certain that the folks who live in New England, which saw many events which helped start the revolution against the tyranny of Britain, will take the appropriate course of action.

Surprising to see so many calgunners hating on the guy. Our own 'assault weapon' registration was narrowly avoided, don't forget...
