Never, ever use UPS Ground.
If you have to ship complete firearms you must ship UPS Next Day or Second Day Air because Fedex and DHL have a no-gun shipping policy. For everything else like parts (an AR upper is a part, not a gun) use Fedex Ground or DHL Ground. Shipping fees are comparable and in some instances even cheaper. And unlike UPS they do not lose packages.

I would guess 98% of the time you are in good hands, but something like that maybe should request a signature kinda thing..

This is not all true. I just shipped a firearm (long arm) by UPS ground on Monday with no issues at all. I even declared the shipment being a rifle. I was quoted UPS Next Day Air at over $100.00, that ain't happing! FedEx Priority Overnight was over $120.00. UPS ground = $18 with $500 insurance.

01 & 03 FFL's can ship FedEx, but it MUST be Priority Overnight.

i had a package turn up 2 years later with usps. battered and torn up and dirty as sin but the contents were fine.

One of the problems with rifles and rifle parts like uppers, is lousy packing!!
These boxes get tossed many times while in process and if the heavy rifle isnt' packed well it's gonna poke that muzzle out the end of the box. Then who knows what happens after that I had an AK kit come in and it was an absolute piss poor packing job. The end of the box was completely torn open from movement of the parts. Fortunately the shipper had all the small parts bagged up and taped to the big parts which were in turn all taped together. So when you ship a rifle or any long heavy parts, double box and make sure that nothing can slide around inside.

Sorry to hear about your upper but I bet it turns up.

FedEx does ship firearms...I have used them a lot.

I have had a few issues with UPS on firearm shipments

1. Ammo left on porch that required an adult signature
2. Rifle that was overnighted from the factory (after repair) was sent to the wrong address.
3. Mag kit was lost in transit and delivered 4 weeks later (no explanation)

Over the years I've had a few issues with UPS.

I worked Loss Prevention at a retail store. I was checking the outside of the store with one of my cameras an noticed a brown box sitting on our closed dock. I went outside to check it out and it turned out it was a jewelry delivery. When I reviewed video, the driver had just left it on the dock, apparently coming inside the store was too much of a hassle.

As for DHL, I would never use them again. They lost the fender for my car. The box was HUGE, and somehow they managed to lose it. I contacted the company I purchased it from and they told me they would send another one. I finally got one a week later, and the other one the day after the first one. One was too damaged to be used. The other was damaged but not beyond what the body shop could fix.

For the most part though, I think UPS does a good job and from my experience, their drivers are nicer than Fedex.

The parts that were lost in this case are not controlled parts. Treat them as you would any other item that gets lost. You don't need to report it to DOJ or anyone else. Just follow up with the seller and work through it with UPS.

I shipped an amplifier through them that they dropped and damaged. It was boxed in the original box, then placed into a larger box filled with packing peanuts and they were still able to damage it Anyway, it worked but was cosmetically altered so I contact them (it was insured). They would not authorize any insurance pay out because THEY did not pack it and could not verify if the damage wasn't there prior. I even had pics from the ad I posted showing no damage. They don't pack, they're not responsible was their reply.

I've used ups and fedex ALOT and they are both triping over themselves to be the biggest dumb ***. I have had them leave a $1200 guitar amplifier sitting in my front yard that has big letters that say Johnson Amplification on it. When I came home I could read the box from the corner like 5 houses away. They have also left a $1000 drum set sitting in my front yard. I get everything deliverd to my office now. If they won't ship to my office I don't need it. I even got permission from the boss man to list my office as the shipping address for my 03ffl.

I think this is the first time UPS lost a package of mine. Go figure...

Good news is that once the investigation is over, you get a brand new upper, stock and mags, not a used one.
