It depends on the gun. Different guns have different designs and different things can be effected by repetitive "racking". If you have a cheap gun made from inferior metal, it will wear faster than better built guns.
Some guns, like the 1911, the slide slamming forward on an empty chamber CAN damage internal parts (many people believe that it can't hurt it).
*before jumping in and arguing that it can't hurt the 1911, please do some research. Also, please note that I said "can" and not "will".Comment

My guns probably had their actions cycled 100 times for every round that went downrange. Breaking in, building muscle memory, practicing position shooting, cleaning, testing - I was always doing something with them. And yes, I just enjoyed the feel and sound!
When it comes to cycling I almost always let the spring do the work. There are some guns that won't lock up properly if you try to ease them into battery. On some I will ease them closed, but those are almost always collector-grade guns, not shooters. Heck, I've even seen a few collector-grade that have never had the action cycled after they left the factory!Tarasdad

"*Will* break the gun", according to my not-so-gun-savvy brother, though he owns several guns.
I think he's just annoyed with the sound I keep making
That aside, does he have a point that I could break my gun by cycling the bolt/slide on an empty chamber constantly hundreds of times a day?
Don't ask me why I rack them so often every single day, I just love my guns that much!
