how do i check a firearm

A resent widow down the street from me is selling her husbands winchester model 70 its never been shot and has never had a scope mounted on it or sights . I want to check and make sure its not stolen before we start the process of finding a ffl dealer. If her husband was a crook i would hate to see her get in trouble.
is there a place to call in numbers?
