    Remington 870 rail

Got a quick question. I wanted to install a rail on my 870 but am not sure if I would have to replace the barrel or can I get one installed on it? I was hoping to add a reflex sight that's why I ask.

Can someone point me in the correct direction of how or where I can buy the parts or do it myself.

    Thanks :-)

Just get it done right and have it drilled and tapped for a proper rail.

Similar. I don't have to change the barrel? I can just add to the shotgun?

Was debating that. What would be the going rate you think and would it be worth it in the end instead of just getting the ones that screw in?

I have drilled and tapped a few 870's.
If you detail strip the shotgun and remove the stock, it's only a couple $20 bills.
It's more if I have to do the full teardown and reassembly as well...

We make the rail in question. It's a good rail. But the point of that system is to allow someone to quickly fit a rail to their shotgun without gunsmithing.

We tell folks if you are willing to drill and tap the receiver, that is always the better way to go. More reliable, more permanent, less to go wrong.

We make a rail for that too.

Very true to be more reliable. On average how long does the rail have to be?

Receiver length rails are generally about five and a half inches long. You don't have to remove the stock to install either style of rail. You don't have to remove the barrel to install the saddle style rail, but a gunsmith will certain remove the barrel to drill and tap a receiver.

Every competition or self defense shotgun needs a receiver mounted " side saddle " shell carrier . I have 2 ! The Mesa tactical is the better of the two!
That said, looks like drill and tap is your best option !

It's much easier to hold the receiver in the milling machine vise with the stock removed.
At least that's how I do it.
If you were drilling the holes with a hand drill or in a drill press, I suppose you don't need to remove the stock as the mill table would not be in the way in those situations.
