Quick guns and ammo in car question!

I'm headed to the range and was going to have my friend drive but realized he has a pick up (no way to secure in bed). Can't have guns and ammo in car I believe, but if the ammo box is locked with a keyed padlock is it okay? Thanks.

    WRONG.

There is no rule requiring ammo to be locked.

Handguns in a locked container that is not the center console or glovebox.

Rifles do not need to be locked except for the federal gun free school zone.

As long as there arent any loaded mags in the guns and they arent chambered with a round,, just lock the container and youre good. Goes for any vehicle

that 1000 feet of a school thing throws a wrench. who knows what and how many schools i'll drive by on the way to the range and where and when i might be pulled over.....

guess i should get some $6 trigger locks to be on the safe side

Trigger locks do not satisfy ANY gun transport laws.

            Unloaded in a case.
If you will pass through a school "zone" put a padlock on the case.

So many hurdles and hoops to jump thru to exercise a God given right.

                I find it completely ridiculous.

These days in California, a locking gun case for transport is a good investment.

A trip to the range, a closed road, a detour that happens to pass by a school, and you could find yourself in violation of the 1000' school zone provision.

Sure, there are exceptions. But a good lockable case is a good way to go. You don't need to go top-end either, so Plano and other molded plastic cases work, as well as some fabric cases with rings for locking. On the higher end, there are Pelican cases and aluminum cases that fit the bill.

I transport all my long guns in a locked case just to avoid the 1000' thing. Just easier for me to lock'em up and toss them into my SUV (No trunk) than to have to explain it at a stop. Should I have to? No. But I do anyway!

I also lock my mags in my range bag unloaded. Extra Paranoid? Probably, but I'm way too good looking to go to jail because some LE doesn't know what's up

Picked up a "micro-vault"; can hold unloaded weapon and 2 loaded mags (no mag in slot).
