Yes, the shove it in the end of the barrel type.

Then I discovered that they're a massive waste of money.

You don't even need a vise. You just need to be able to point it at something and have it not move. You can do that with an AR upper by setting it on a table.

For a rifle that you can't simply look down the bore, there are a few methods for that as well that don't involve a laser(go look 'em up. Some use a mirror, some don't). But even then, if you've got a fairly large target backer at 25 yards, you'll likely be on paper anyway unless something is way off(and that would probably be a little obvious).

edit: BTW, cartridge bore sighters aren't any better. Consider that people managed to do it for decades long before lasers existed, and it should become really obvious that such a device isn't necessary.

Those things suck...I pointed at the neighbors cat! The cat thought the dot was a toy!

Somewhat useful for guns that don't allow you to see down the bore. However, here in California I just shoot at a dirt clod and adjust my sights until I'm close. It takes two or three shots to get on paper.

Laser bore sighter works well for two things: (1) adjust windage, (2) be on paper with the first shot.

They don't work well for fine tuning of elevation which is distance-dependent.

I have Site-Lite and use it after mounting any scope to get initial rough adjustment and particularly to set windage on handguns (due to nature of firing, windage is not always too obvious when shooting). Then, you have to finish adjustments with live ammo anyway.

Just the ability to adjust windage and only worry about elevation is reason enough for me to use them.

                  I use two.
1st one is SiteLite to get me with a new rifle on paper.
2nd is Leupold Magnetic Bore Sighter. This one i use to verify my gun before or after hunting and also when i want to put a new scope on my old gun where i already have a record.

Saves a lot of money and time. Especially Leupold Magnetic Bore Sighter. I can swap between scopes or put ones without going to range to sight gun in.

Make sure you remove before firing lest you wind up with the dreaded steel umbrella!

How the tarnation does somebody DO that anyway?

I use one I got from cableas,

It's the type you stick in the end of your barrel. It has different end pieces so that you can use in in a variety of calibers. I've used it for my .50 muzzleloading rifle, my .22lr rifle, and my M&P40. It's great, as was said before, for getting you on the paper on the first shot and checking windage. The horizontal level attachment can be useful for making sure your scope is correctly installed, but you'll need a vise to hold your rifle for that to work properly.

It's also good at night for making my kids run around the yard and expend that last bit of energy before bedtime

I have one that goes in the muzzle end of the barrel. Works to get you on paper as everyone else has said. After that, useless.

Bought one of the cheap chamber ones from Amazon (~$15 or so), never worked ie wouldn't even turn on. Returned it and use the manual method like I always have.

I'm sure a higher quality one would work better, but for the amount I would use it I couldn't justify the cost.

                              +1

Usually aim at a small rock or something. Can usually get very close shooting standing up with about 1 magazine.

I had a bore sighter for my AR. Put it in the chamber (bullet shaped one) adjusted the dot on top of it. When I shot it, it wasn't anywhere near where I set it.

Ended up doing the shoot at the dirt method.
