$1,000 Hunting Rifle Package

If you were looking to buy a new hunting rig for deer and elk, and had only $1,000 to spend, what would you buy and why? The $1,000 includes the rifle (caliber), scope, rings/bases (not tax).

I know that it's a natural inclination to "buy" what you want, but the question is......."what would you buy IF you only had $1,000"......not $1,400, $2,000 or more!

My setup:
Rifle - Remington 700 CDL in .30-06 $700
Rings/Base - Leopold $150
Scope - Bushnell Elite 4500 6-24x40 $485

I wouldn't skimp on a couple hundred dollars for the right hunting rifle.

My holy grail is a Pre '64 Winchester in .30-06

Tikka T3 in .308, oh wait, I just got one! Still deciding on optics.

You could either spring for one of those out-of-the-box Savage or Tikka's, or a R700 and slap a scope on it. Either way it would come down to caliber, unless youre planning on taking game from longer distances.

Tikka lite in .3006, 549 at Turners right now, There is a nice Zeiss conquest on samplelist right now for 349 and rings of your flavor.
Done.

I love & shoot Remington, but for being relatively inexpensive, those Savage packages are darn impressive right out of the box.

I don't have any experience with them, but I think you can get the TC Dimension or Venture rifles in that price range too.

I would keep an eye on the long gun forum. I recently picked up a like new Winchester M 70 in 7mm-08 with a Nikon scope for under $600. I'd use it on deer no problem. And elk too.
