    Update on Yosemite fire

My Brother got back from the Yosemite fire and he said that around the time he left, the fire investigators had moved their search area to a place frequented by gold miners and that it would be odd for shooters to hike into that area for target practice.

I wouldn't plan on this making the news though.

    Interesting

makes sense - I never saw a copper or a lead bullet make sparks, did myth busters prove this a few months ago?

Was it gold miners or the new gold (pot) miners stoak'n along the trail?

    Please keep us posted.

Heard on NPR this afternoon that "...charges will not be filed against the 28 year old man who admitted to target shooting in the area..."

I'll try to find a link to the story unless someone beats me to it.

      Here's one:

I should have added that my brother is also a shooter and he would not be willing to shoot in a field under the current weather conditions.

please explain how lead and copper and brass hitting a rock can start a fire?

and what type of rock is needed to do this?? sand stone, granite, lava? red/black/grey/other...

i am not into rocks...but even i know there are lots of different kinds in ca.

those who do not know just need to know.

I will be going shooting tomorrow at BLM land. Question? If I put my rounds in the freezer tonight, will they be cool enough not to start a fire if they hit a rock?

I think it's the rock that must generate the sparks.
I don't know about rocks either though, but I have seen some serious sparks off of rocks shot with conventional copper/lead bullets.

One of the most common types of "rock" found in this state is granite. It's every where. Granite contains a small percentage of IRON and MAGNESIUM (most igneous rock does). Strike the 2 together hard enough (such as being driven together by the impact of a bullet), and even if it's a minute amount, and you can get a VERY hot spark.

I was at a silhouette match at the Keystone range near Jamestown several years ago when smoke appeared in the dry grass at the Ram line. We all drove down there and had the flames beaten down when the CDF helicopter appeared overhead soon followed by a tanker and a Bulldozer on a lowboy truck. The man running the match was a fireman and the first thing he did was call CDF when smoke was first spotted. The man shooting at that bank of Rams was using military surplus ammo. He was not shooting tracers.

No, you have to soak them in water for an hour, then freeze them for a minimum of 4 hours. Then you should be good to go. Thats how I do it.

Your brother doesn't know what he is talking about. I was out there while it was still "hot" and saw where it started. The guy who started it admitted to doing it from shooting. He is off the hook. Case closed. ETA... there is no Yosemite fire. It's called the Telegraph Fire and it is near the quaint town of Mariposa. If you are ever up there the Miners Inn has good food and good drinks but you must watch out for the cougars. Also Happy Burger has good food and the waitresses are friendly.

So, just how did he start the fire while shooting? Set a cigarette down for a bit, drop a cigar? Shooting Black powder and the sabbot insetion was sloppy?
