5.45x39 upper can allow you to shoot for around 15c/round and it will feel similar to 5.56x45. Those surplus Spam-cans with 1,080 rounds can be had for around $160.

Another option is a dedicated AK-74, but it has quite a different feel from you AR, so not sure it's what you're looking for.

Airsoft is pretty sweet for training purposes...more then I thought. The airsoft guns are realistic and ammo is cheap!

How does the dry firing make a difference? You don't get feedback from the target that you're doing it right. You could be just reinforcing a bad habit.

Is it just seeing how long you can keep the sights on target and call it good? I like my Sheridan Blue Streak, 4 pumps and good to go.

I was thinking the same thing, unless you've had a great foundation in marksmanship its likely dry practice will not teach you the marksmanship skills you expect .

A good start is to get Fred's " guide to marksmanship " which is available through his website and is found in the magazine " shotgun news"

Last month I bought a couple of bricks of Federal Champions for $24 each, shipping included. They have specials about every month, if you pay attention.

Go w/ the 22 conversion or get a complete 22 upper. Btw I think I've bought about 8k 22lr rounds from Cabelas over the last 6 months or so.

Shoot .22lr, its hard to find but can be found. Also try going with steel cased .223, which cuts costs around half (pretty much all I shoot).

It is easier to tell if you're flinching or pulling the firearm to one side or another while you're dry firing. Harder to tell during real firing because the gun is moving on its own a bit.

I never flinch with an empty gun and dry firing. Because I know it's not going to pound my shoulder or worse. Best thing I saw being done was have someone else load the gun and put a couple of snap cap rounds in the mag. And then it was obvious if I was flinching when I'm jerking on a snap cap. Try it.

It sounds like a real world easy way to identify people with a flinch.

Most often, this is done with handgun, but can translate to rifle as well.

But I lol at the idea of people flinching with a little girly 223....
