What is considered proof of residency?

I just bought my first gun and after I paid for it they asked me for two proofs of residency. I didn't know you needed this proof. All I have is my drivers license which says my parents address and my car registration which says my current address so I don't have two proofs. I have been at my current address for over two years. I looked online to see what else can qualify as proof of residency but am getting different answers on every website. Nothing at my current address is in my name(utility bill, PG&E, rental agreement) I have credit card statements, bank statements, paychecks, insurance card, etc. that has my address on it but what actually qualifies as proof? Help me out guys!!

Have your parents write you a rental agreement for your room and have it notarized. I think a voter registration card qualifies too.

    Also.

      What did you buy?

I'll speculate a handgun, because CA law does not require proof of residency for long guns.

      CA DOJ says
What documentation is acceptable proof of residency for handgun purchasers?

Utility bill from within the past three months that bears on its face the individual's name and either of the following:
The individual's current residential address as declared on the DROS form; or
The individual's residential address as it appears on his or her California Driver License or California Identification Card, or change of address attachment thereto.

The individual's current residential address as declared on the DROS form; or
The individual's address as it appears on his or her California Driver License or California Identification Card, or change of address attachment thereto.
"Residential lease" means either of the following:
A signed and dated contract by which the individual (tenant) agrees to pay a specified monetary sum or provide other consideration for the right to occupy an abode for a specified period of time; or
A signed and dated rental agreement by which the individual (tenant) agrees to pay a specified monetary sum or provide other consideration at fixed intervals for the right to occupy an abode.
Property deed that bears the individual's name and either of the following:
The individual's current residential address as declared on the DROS form; or
The individual's address as it appears on his or her California Driver License or California Identification Card, or change of address attachment thereto.
"Property deed" means either or the following:
A valid deed of trust for the individual's property of current residence that identifies the individual as a grantee of the trust; or
A valid Certificate of Title issued by a licensed title insurance company that identifies the individual as a title holder to his or her property of current residence.
Current, government-issued license, permit, or registration, other than a California Driver License or California Identification Card, that has a specified expiration date or period of validity. The license, permit, or registration must bear the individual's name and either of the following:
The individual's current residential address as declared on the DROS form; or
The individual's address as it appears on his or her California Driver License, California Identification Card, or change of address attachment thereto.
Examples of acceptable proof of residency:
      Current DMV registrations.
Electricity, gas, cable bill with purchaser's name on it from within the last 3 months.
Signed, dated and notarized rental agreement/contract.
Examples of documents that are NOT acceptable proof of residency:
Hunting or fishing license (these documents are not issued by the government).
      Cellular phone bill.
      One way to address
Nothing at my current address is in my name(utility bill, PG&E, rental agreement)
is to get a separate rental agreement.

Well I asked my roommate if she would make a rental agreement for me since I rent a room from her and we can get it notarized. She said that she doesn't want to get taxed for me living here. Will that happen if she makes one?

Your drivers license and car registration should be good enough.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

Notary isn't necessary. When was the last time you went to one for a rental contract? I never did and I used one for proof a few years back, before I bought my house.

All CA handgun DROS must be accompanied by a POR..

-Utility bill from within the past 3 months that has your name & address (that matches the 4473 you filled out.) Must be a statement of charges for providing service to your residence via physical or telemetric connection to a non mobile fixed antenna reception device

-residential lease with your name and address (4473), signed and dated

-property deed, with your name and address (4473)

-current government issued license, permit, or registration other than your CA DL or ID that has specified expiration or period of validity (cannot be DMV Printout.) Document must bear your name & address matching the 4473

                    ====
DMV change of address forms are not valid.
                    ====

Ultimately it was your responsibility to have been aware of being able to produce a proof of residency before you decided to purchase a handgun in CA

All correct, but in reality, ask your LGS what they will accept as proof of residency. Recently the boys in the store I was buying a gun did NOT recognize my Captain License- "Merchant Marine Officer License". Goverment issued, picture, current expiration date, address... The whole shebang... I live few blocks away from the store, went back and grabbed my car registration /I was with my wife's car/. Everybody has different idea what is OK and what is not OK.
And I am talking about big San Diego store, shooting range, 20+ employees...
Too many rules for some people.

Probably because that is a FEDERAL document, not CA / municipal

Probably you are right. But the way I reed the law /English is not my first language, and I am not a lawyer/ it says "Goverment issued". Maybe I missandurstand or USCG/Homeland Security Department are not part of the "Goverment" we are talking about.

Here is the law copied from above

"Current, government-issued license, permit, or registration, other than a California Driver License or California Identification Card, that has a specified expiration date or period of validity. The license, permit, or registration must bear the individual's name and either of the following:
The individual's current residential address as declared on the DROS form; or....."

BTW, the captains license is issued in Long Beach, CA /if this makes any difference/.

Who knows.. Very well may have been good to go. These laws are so wishy washy & vague that gun stores probably tend to refuse documents that they aren't absolutely sure will be acceptable. Blame CA..

Exactly my point! People will stick to what they know for sure and refuse even perfectly legal documents/deals.
Try to purchase off roster handgun, and explain to the guy in Texas /just an example/ why is legal to ship it to FFL in CA. If you succeed with this, ask him to remove the springs and ship the rest of the 15 round magazines.
I guarantee it- the guy on the other side will hang up the phone long before you are done explaining what you want to purchase for $1200.00.
Way too many pointless rules! Politics...
