*sigh* Another bad experience with Turners (Reseda)

So I go in today to do a PPT. I come in with my Drivers License (which contains my old address), a current phone bill and a current lease agreement. I have changed my address via the DMV Online system, so everything is kosher in the system. My car registration also has an older address, which has also been changed. Again, via the online system.

    According to the BOF website:

As part of the DROS process, the buyer must present "clear evidence of identity and age" which is defined as a valid, non-expired California Driver's License or Identification Card issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles. A military identification accompanied by permanent duty station orders indicating a posting in California is also acceptable.

Purchasers of handguns are also required to provide proof of California residency, such as a utility bill, residential lease, property deed, or government-issued identification (other than a drivers license or other DMV-issued identification).

So I have my current, un-expired, valid CA DL, and a proof of residency, both of which satisfy the governmental requirement.

Of course, this isn't good enough for them. They claim I need to bring in the address change receipts from the DMV or show my registration. The 'manager' also claimed this is state policy rather than a store policy, which is obviously somewhat of a lie.

I hate this Turners. What is it with the Reseda store hiring supervisors who can't get their heads out of their arses?

    same thing happened to me

The same thing happened to me recently at bass pro shops in rancho cucamonga. I had gone online and changed the address, not bothering to get the little card at the dmv. In order to start the dros process you will be required to present the little tan card with a date/time stamp verifying that you attempted to change address. The only way you can get the card is to wait in line and get it date stamped. I was able to get one of those stupid cards at the AAA office easily. I went to the DMV first, the line had over 250 people in it -forget it! Not all dealers are sticklers, but bass pro told me that they were being scrutinized and could not skip any aspect of their paperwork compliance. I recall this issue coming up in another earlier thread, it is just one more example of how CA screws its law abiding citizens.

      That's the thing though.

That's not a matter of California law, that's a matter of the store being overly bureaucratic. The ID is simply for Identification; if it is a valid ID card, the address is irrelevant. Proof of residency is where the address matters. Arrgghh.

If there are any FFLs who know different, please say so. I'd love to know if there actually was something passed down from BOF to this effect.

        I just don't get it...

You're complaining that they're unwilling to bend the rules and simplify your life - make this easier for you, risking their FFL, for a $10 commission on a PPT?

Get your stuff together - this goes for ALL FFLs - before you go there.

That being said, I don't have much love for Turner's in Reseda... there's only one or two guys there who are nice and decent. Redondo beach is better.

Also, keep in mind, you are NOT exempt from the 30days doing a PPT at Reseda (i.e., if you did a PPT within 30days they'll deny it - it's a Los Angeles municipal code).

          Did a PPT today

Did one at Turner's in Fountain Valley and it was a positive experience. Guys at the counter were nice and all went smoothly. The only complaint would be it took longer and what seemed like more paperwork than at my usual shop (Ade's).

Bend what rules? That's the thing. It's a rule they created, and what really annoyed is that he wouldn't admit to it. He claims it's a state law, which, according to the BOF website, is not true, at all.

"Get your stuff together - this goes for ALL FFLs - before you go there."
I do. I've never had a problem at any other FFL (except Gun World, and that's because they said they'd transfer OLLs on the phone and then decided not to when I got there in person).

that's funny, last time I did a PPT and bought two new handguns, the store didn't give me a hard time on he address difference between my DL and my utility bill. And I would imagine the store, and particular the store employee who is a mod here, know a thing or two about PPT rules.

Out of curiosity, exactly what rules were being bent? I've purchase numerous handguns and rifles with a different address than the one on my CDL. Purchased from Turners in Kearny Mesa, SoCalguns off of convoy, and Iron sights in Oceanside and I've never had a problem. People move all of the time and the DMV will not send you a new CDL simply for an address change. Here's an interesting link on the matter:

I figured I might have an issue because the (Stoopid) DMV put my mailing address (PO BOX) on my DL and my actual residence as my mailing address (not on the DL). But I took in my Gas & Phone bills and my local dealer was kewl with that.

Some people just don't know how to read, they either misinterpret or they go off some other idiots second hand knowledge. I use to have the same problem with anti-piracy laws so I would walk around with a printout in my back pocket to education to numb-nuts of the world.

Their company rules. They put them in place to protect themselves. Sure, it's a pain, but I don't quite understand why everyone *expects* that if there are any irregularities with matching addresses/names/etc. on their paperwork that it should just be fine.

My point is this: if you don't like it, go somewhere else. If you're going to do a PPT and you have inconsistent paperwork, why not call them and ask if your paperwork is OK BEFORE you go there?

I can understand being disappointed and frustrated, but shops set up rules because they can't afford it when paperwork isn't done consistently.

Their shop, their rules. It's that simple.

That's interesting. I purchased a Glock 21 and a rem 870 from Turners in Kearny Mesa a couple of months ago and no problems at all other than them taking forever to help me. I take it these are newly implemented company rules?

Sure. They can say so, though, instead of making up crap like it's state law. And in the other places I've done PPTs, it hasn't been a problem. I had no inclination that it would be a problem prior to going there.

And, as a consumer, I also have the right to relay negative experience to others so that they can chose to avoid the establishment in the future.

I'm not a Turner's lover either.. but I don't think their request was unreasonable..

You're trying to use your CA DL as a "Proof of Residency"

How do you expect to prove your residency without providing a correct address?

He's using his Driver's License as proof of identity, not residency.

I bought two guns from Wes with my old address on my Driver's license and the unstamped printout from the DMV website.

                              Reread what I posted.

I was using my DL as a proof of Identity. The DL does not, under any circumstance, count for proof of residency.

I was using both my phone bill AND my lease agreement as proof of residency.
