Pretty sure that one you modify it to accept standard AK mags, you trigger 922r.

You are going to get conflicting answers. If you are going to add a bullet guide you might as well convert at least the back end. Then you will be 922r compliant.

No if it has the ability to accept 10+ rd mags it is no longer "sporting" which triggers 922r and can't have more that 10 foreign parts

          This is correct.

What would be the easiest parts to switch out? I'm in the same boat.

Truthfully, has anyone ever been charged with a 922r violation?

$10 Tapco gas piston is the easiest part to change out, counts as 1 US part.

This is debateable. I did my gas piston and it was chore and half to get the original piston out, but that's just my experience, others may be different.

Easiest things in my opinion are stock, forend and magazine (magazines count as 3 parts: Body, floorplate and follower). Next easiest is probably the FCG. You can buy a complete US made FCG from Tapco or Tromix (which counts as another 3 parts: hammer, sear, disconnector). If you go with a Tapco FCG remember that the hammer needs to be modified. Tromix FCG are made by Tapco, but they pre-file the hammers so they don't need to be modifed for use in a Saiga.
