    Captain America Shield, plausible?

    Now by plausible I do not mean if it were something you'd carry. Unless it were ultra-light vibranium. The question is, is there a lightweight metal (titanium, perhaps) that would be bullet resistant up to 7.62 (or 44mag if 7.62 is too hot of a round), from which such a shield could be constructed? If possible (albeit expensive, I assume), who would someone go see about such a shield? This shield, as decorative as it would seem, would have to be functional. Not for throwing around and boomeranging as much as bullet defense. Just a question I've always had.
    And yes, I'm a huge Steve Rogers fan.

    AR500 steel.

    You might want to get the hulk to hold it up though.

      +1 on AR500.

      Demolition Ranch did a couple of youtube videos shooting at plate. It stopped FMJ .308 but a .50 and a .308 AP round went through it.

        The other problem with that shield is that it's quite small. If you tried to protect your head with it, you'd expose your torso and abdomen.

          Aren't the shields SWAT teams use when walking up kind of like it? I mean just make it into a circle and there you go, right?

            I just wish the was a lighter something for swingers and gongs that would hold up to higher power rifles. those steel targets get heavy if you have to carry them vary far.

              Yep, and they will cover all vitals. Plus you can see through that nifty window! I believe they start around 2,000.00

                In a word? NO

                Titanium is not some super metal. It has certain properties that make it advantageous in certain situations but in others it won't be worth it. I have little doubt that your average .30 cal round would punch through 1/4" Grade 5 titanium alloy plate. XM855 might be able to do it, as well. Either way, a strong enough shield would be damn heavy.

                    I cannot think of a way to have a lightweight, relatively bullet prof shield. The best "light weight armors" work by, e.g., having two layers, one that works to deflect or tumble the round. I believe this is how aluminum armor works

                          I worked with a lot of aircraft titanium back in the day. It's definitely a super metal, no doubt, but extremely unforgiving to high impact hits as it tends to just break or at best best bend and contort (worked on repairing a lot of turbine blades that birds were unfortunate enough to fly into). Engineers would also bring me a lot of titanium brackets that were out of spec and needed destroyed... That I'd place on the concrete floor and give one good whack with my 5 pound hammer to make it split in half and shoot across my work area.

                          Titanium is great for high heat environments that require tolerance to a lot of vibration and constant back and forth bending like airplane bulkheads and turbine blades, but it certainly does have its weaknesses and WILL fail quite catastrophically when exposed to said weaknesses.

                          In my experience, AR500 is just where it is when it comes to armor plating. Give me a solid inch of that stuff and I'd feel relatively confident in it absorbing a round of 50 BMG without immediately compromising the thing.
