I am driving to the east coast in a month or so and was wondering if there are any laws about how much I can carry in my trunk. I am retired so I do have a lot. I searched but couldn't find anything about this. Thanks for the help.

Never heard of any restriction on how much ammo you can have."That rifle hanging on the wall of the working-class flat or labourer's cottage is the symbol of democracy. It is our job to see that it stays there." George Orwell

Look up the DOT CFR 49. It's the publication that covers the transport of all hazmat.
I transport ammunition quite regularly and a lot of the requirements have to deal with NEW (net explosive weight). Unless you have a huge amount your probably fine but the publication I referenced above can answer it for sure. If you can't find the answer pm me your amounts and I can try to find the pub in my office. I know I have one somewhere as I used to be certified to certify hazmat for air, sea, and land shipment.Comment

If it weighs so much that it damages the freeway then you'll probably need a transport permit.
There are likely fire code restrictions on transporting large quantities of real black powder, not so much with modern cartridges.Comment

Tmk, loaded ammo ships by common carrier without hazmat charges, primers and/or powder need the hazmat.
Based on busting up a few pallet loads of .308 surplus delivered by truck.
I'd avoid DC, NYC, etc.

If you can fit it all in your trunk, you don't have "a lot". That said, your vehicle is only designed to carry a certain payload. You can be ticketed for any overages.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

Good luck!
I dread (and at the same time look forward to) the day I have to move the "supplies" and armory out of state.

Where I am going
Thanks guys for all the info. I am moving to the west coast of Fl. ( 33948) between Tampa and Ft. Myers. Most of my ammo is .22 LR with some other mixed in. I have collected much more than I have shot in my 63 years so just trying to get there without any problems. It will all fit in a small foot locker (2X2X4 ft.)in the back of my truck safely locked and out of site.
