    I'm Sorry Guys...

I know this has been gone over before here - but I cannot find the answer even tough I searched.

My friend's father lives in CA - he has a handgun, a P7 (not one the safe list), he wants to give it to his son and it to be in his sons name (son also lives in CA) - his son has a bunch of hunting shotguns and pistols, an HSC card, and is a NRA member. Do the father and son have to do the PTP and wait 10 days? Or can the father just give the son the pistol?

    -Both parties are of age
-Both are legally allowed to own a pistol
    -No one is a LEO
    -Both only reside in CA

Again I apologize, I did search, but the weirdest scenarios came up and I didn't know if they applied.

    Thanks.

Is it a P7 PSP? Because the P7M8 is on the list.

There's a form they have to fill out for the transfer - Lets go look.

Took too long. Howard got it.

The father gives it to his son, the son completes this form http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/forms/pdf/oplaw.pdf and sends it with a check for $19. to the DOJ/BOF...

        No DROS/NO FFL involved..

If their relationship is father-son, and the recipient is not prohibited from possessing firearms, father can give his pistol directly to his son and the son has to fill out the interfamilial/op-law form, pay the $19 and send it in... within 30 days. All son needs is the HSC or an exemption to it. Long guns, generally speaking, can just be handed over. No need to involve a dealer.

The roster is not applicable to this type of transfer. So it doesn't matter if it is on the list or not.

not to hijack a thread. but along the same lines of father to son.

a friends dad died some years back, son was giver the pistols and never did any paper work,(did not know about the need) can he still do the one page paper and not have much problems?

both pistols could be pre 68? (nothing fancy just a couple low budget .22cal.)

Never Ever Ever Ever, send cash in the mail!!!

The person who opens the envelope only has to say, "It was empty except for the form" and they now have beer money. For a lot of people it only takes an easy opportunity to slip from honest person to theif.

Use either a check or a money order. This way there is a paper trail and you don't lose your money.

I just looked at the PDF (took 15 min to open) and it only has info for one person, the owner - how does the 'man' know who the gun is being transfered to?

The one person is the person who has received the gun(s) (transferee). The transferor is entered in the "ACQUIRED FROM" box - be sure to squeeze in "Father" or whatever relationship that person has to the transferee.

Do they send you a confirmation letter back? How long does this process take?

Yes, they will send back a confirmation letter. It can take anywhere from two weeks to four months.

When you send in the Intra-familial handgun report you are reporting a transfer that has already happened. So the handgun already belongs to the son when he sends in the form. He doesn't need to wait for the confirmation letter or anything.
