Question about trading guns, please read!!

I traded a rifle to a member here and I am wondering if I have to send anything to CA DOJ stating that I am no longer the owner.

Also, a couple months ago I sold a Shotgun to Cabelas in Reno, NV and I am wondering if there is anything I have to send to CA DOJ on that one.

To the first question, was the rifle over 50 years old? If no...then no, nothing needs to be sent to DOJ. If the rifle was less than 50 years old, you and the tradee need to get to an 01 FFL and do a Private Party Transfer. Not doing so is illegal.

On the second question, the short answer is no.

I didnt think you had to register long guns in california. I guess if you want it out of your name as far as registration is concerned........ I could be wrong though. I know hand guns need to be registered

all guns (other then black powder and longguns over 50 yo) need to go thru an ffl

NO! only modern hanguns that have changed hands since 1991 need to be "registered". I legally own several unregisted handguns in California. If I wasn't sure that it was perfectly legal for me to own unregistered modern handguns, I would not post it on any public forum. To the many people here are just too young and or unclear on the laws, please don't post what you think to be true without knowing for sure and being able to back it up. This is how misinformation gets spread.

Yes, they were sent to FFL before the transfers.

if you went to a ffl and did the transfer there then your good

I seriously would not worry about a thing. It sounds like you did everything legit, so you are good to go. Now the only you need to worry about is getting more guns and ammo..........
