    Storage Fee ?

I recently purchased a handgun from a local dealer. I looked at the receipt after I brought it home and noticed that I was charged a $ 10.00 "storage fee". No big deal as the price for the pistol was much less than anywhere else I looked. The thing is that I was never told about this fee before hand. It was brand new, not a used gun.

Is this "fee" standard now or what ? This is my first handgun purchase in 13 years.

I also hear from a friend that his friend tried to consign a gun at this same shop and was told there would be a $25.00 "storage fee". He took his gun home with him.

seems like if california requires them holding the gun for 10 days a person shouldn't have to pay of course if you leave it there for 20 days i see no problem with the fee

If they didn't disclose the fee up front, or have readily placed, legible signs posted, than I would say that is a bad business practice. Not illegal, but defiantly something to complain to the management about, nicely. Unless of course it IS plainly posted, then you're SOL.

How about posting the stores name, so I know where not to shop...

It's just extra, added, supplemental, profit. I had the same $10 last time I dealt with an FFL.

As far as the price of the gun itself - yes it was as advertised. I bought some other stuff the day I did the paperwork plus had to pay for DROS and test fees. With tax and everything it sounded right. I didn't look at the receipt again until after I picked up the gun and noticed the extra $10 charge. It's officially listed as "Dealer Storage/Insurance" fee. I would have had no problem paying it, but they could have told me about it first.

Would not go back. Ten dollars for storage? Just a way to get some money.

In answer to your question, no I do not believe it is a "standard charge." I occasionally hear horror stories about dealers charging extra "storage fees" in connection with private party transactions. But I've never heard of a dealer gouging a customer like that on a gun bought directly from a dealer. At the least, they should have disclosed it to you up front.

I encourage you to disclose the name of the dealer on this forum. Many will not elect to do business there. Perhaps if enough people complain, they will change their policy.

Personally, I'd complain about having to pay a "storage fee" on a NEW handgun that wasn't STORED at their establishment at my request. Sounds more like the almost countless ways that our government gets every single penny out of us through added "luxury" taxes, "surcharges", taxes on license/registration fees, etc.

While it may not be illegal to add such a fee, I've never heard of it being added to the sale price of new firearms.

I wouldn't pay a storage fee for a gun I bought from them.
