Moving back to Socal from NC

My time being a paratrooper is over May 6 and I will be moving back to San Diego.

I have 14.5 mid length ar15 mega upper and lower, and a M&P shield 40.
From what I understand, MEGA is in the safe zone to take back home, but what about the Shield 40? It is not a CA compliant, would this be a huge problem?

The CA compliant is just a red tab pops up when the gun is loaded.
Another question, would I have to register my "Assault rifle"?

    Thanks!

Your 14.5 will have to have a pinned and welded brake/flash suppressor that takes the barrel length to a minimum 16". Also check http://www.calguns.net/caawid/flowchart.pdf just to make sure you're compliant.

You will need a bullet button. Once the bullet button is installed, any mag with a capacity of more that 10 rnds is illegal to install.

Registration will be required, but not as an "assault weapon." "Assault weapon" registration has been closed for years now. All long guns must be registered as of 1-1-14. This applies to any transfer or importation.

I think you will be ok bringing in the handgun. If I'm wrong, someone please correct me.

The handgun will also have to be registered.

Will you still be in the military? If so there may be other options and/or restrictions for you.

      ^ youre correct

Any non rostered handgun is legal to import and possess, so long as it doesnt include a threaded barrel, or is mag locked if the owner wishes to keep the threading.

The handgun roster only applies to what us little people in state can purchase new from an FFL (SSE not withstanding). Owning non rostered guns is not a crime, and many of us actually do through SSE.

I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong, but...aside from what everyone else said, any mags that hold more than 10 rounds are illegal to bring with you unless permanently modified to only accept 10 rounds prior to bringing them into the state.

            You are correct.

Illegal to import large capacity (11+ round) magazines.
Illegal to import large capacity magazine rebuild kits (all the parts to make a 11+ round magazine)
Legal to import large capacity magazines that have been permanently modified to hold 10 or less rounds.

You also have some options if you'd like to avoid a bullet button on the rifle. Mainly to take off the features that are used to define an "Assault Weapon".

Problem is there are fewer and fewer people here to give a crap about, seriously consider whether you want stay in CA if you are EAOS. Looking back I wish I had hit the road when I got out in San Diego, and it wasn't nearly as ridiculous as it is now.

It may be a good time to head for a free state.

This - but if you are coming back it's a good time to shop for the stuff(guns) you won't be able to buy when you get here.

Don't come back to stay. You'd regret it.
