    Shooting AR through windshield

I recentluy saw the info about the shootout in NM where the F-wad shot 4 cops and stole the cruiser. Crashed into a gas station then got what he deservered..

New Mexico police released a stunning video showing a shootout with a body armor-clad madman who gunned down four cops before dying in a fusillade of police bullets. The jarring lapel-cam footage was taken in Albuquerque on Oct. 26 during…

Anyway, the video shows the cops driving (at what I assume would be high speed) shooting thoiugh his own windshield with his AR.

Is this tactical brilliance or epic fail? I mean, could you hit anything? Wouldn't you be spraying the whole street? Do they teach this now in tactical schools? I am not being sarchastic- actully I am curious.

I mean, I guess if he was stopped it makes sense cuz he has the whole engine block in front of him...

This was lightly touched on in the thread I started about this video being released. Some guys said that learning this is SOP, I had never seen it outside of SWAT.

I confirmed with some friends and only a couple of them had done this, albeit was a stationary vehicle.

To answer your question, I think you could hit something, but it wont be a precise shot given the conditions

Too many Variables in my book.. You honestly couldnt be able to see beyond target to make an informed decision to shoot.

Hmmm idk, I've heard of it being done, but it's safety is questionable

I'd imagine that to be really loud.

If he was using a blind barrier round such as mk318 it might be pretty effective going through the glass and not tumbling too much. assuming he sees the field of what he's shooting at it might be a smart choice. Just don't attempt it with regular AR ammo

you could break the windshield with the muzzle before you start firing; being in the auto provides cover.

I dont think that is a major concern, the first round would pretty much clear the path

Have you tried to break a windshield before?

Windshields are laminate glass, go break one and see how much it gets out of the way.....

I've done this several times in vehicle tactics classes, but never from a moving vehicle while driving.
Shooting from inside a vehicle through the windshield like that will cause the bullets to deflect UP, so unless he's nice and close, there's a chance he sent rounds over the target. But also, once a hole is in there, pushing out your muzzle and using it like a turret is completely valid, and in fact better than continuing to spray through glass.

As far as just shooting through a windshield is concerned, it's not necessarily something that every agency or officer gets to train, but it's not that uncommon that it happens in real life situations. Last year there was an officer in Ohio I believe, who shot and killed a suspect through the patrol vehicle's windshield after the suspect had exited his vehicle with an AK pattern rifle and started firing at the officer and his partner.

The agency I work for is small and we have two very open minded and creative instructors/range masters so we have been able to practice things like shooting from the seated position in a vehicle, through the windshield (although the windshield had been removed and not while the vehicle was moving)

That being said, I've never seen any LE training that teaches how to shoot a long gun through the windshield while driving. I'm not saying it doesn't exist. We aren't issued long guns so we don't get a lot of exposure to it. Even then though, the

FWIW the first rounds will deflect as they go through the windshield and it is taught (the SHTF) to get that muzzle through the window so that your POA=POI for subsequent rounds.

That situation is as close as a SHTF on duty as I can think of, barring a major Boston Marathon, Sandyhook, Oklahoma Fed Bldg, 9/11 situation. One POV camera shows an officer assisting a fallen brother with unknown vitals/status (sad and maybe the reason "lets get in the fight").

This is the Ohio shoot mentioned there, I think. I think they both shoot thru' the windshield, but the final shots may come from the male cop driver outside the vehicle as he gets half out and behind the door, and reloads.

As to this shoot, what lousy video. Other than the dash of the car, I can't see nothing there, but the AR shooting thru' the windshield while driving.
Good cowboy shooting, but let's get those cameras into better position, ok?
