First time buying AR lower in CA

I am looking to purchase a billet lower to complete my AR15 build. This will be a first time buying a lower in CA. I am trying to figure out what is the most cost effective way to get one.

I've been looking at local gun stores including Turners, and IMO they are over priced when it comes to their lowers. Buying something out of state is also cost prohibitive by the time you add all the transfer fees. Should I post a WTB in Calguns EE Forum and in hopes of finding a decent deal from a private party or should I just pay for a new one at the local gun store? (working with a paperweight isn't in the cards right now).

The words"cost effective" and "billet" don't really belong together, but if you want to go that route, generally the LGS is the best route. Shipping & transfer fees often eat up any savings that can be gained by buying online.

Maybe the shop will special order the lower you want?

Do you understand the differences between forged and billet. Prices for billet are usually $200 to $250.

You night save $20-$30 waiting for something to pop up in marketplace. I would personally get the Mega at Turners which retails for under $200 ($220 OTD if I remember correctly) if I am looking for a Billet lower to complete my build.

Ok. Thanks. I might check them out again. The one in Pasadena as I recall it had LMT and several Franklin Armory. But I'll pop in there again. What I really want is something like San Tan Tactical STT-15 Ambi Lower Receiver. I know this doesn't make a lot of sense but really looking to build a higher end 6.8 rifle. I know a standard forged would do the job too. But that would be too logical... And would make my wife happy...

U should look into forged. They go for about $100. $80 if u shop around (Anderson from Ammo bros).

Location? Try addax tactical or EBR works. Addax always has tons of forged for 100-129. Maybe they have a couple billet in stock.

San Tan forces you to go either featureless or rimfire. The ambi mag release may be hard to retrofit to a bb. I have that problem with the ax556's which I have. That's something to think about with a full ambi lower.

Yes, Forged is also the slight stronger than the billet in term of metal stength. The reason billet cost more is because it offer additional bell ans whistle. So, if you are looking for "cost effective" AR, get a forged. If you got the cash to spend for bling, find your self a billet.

Addax normally has a good amount of lowers in stock. Give them a call.

Don't buy a billet for your first gun. That's something you buy when you have lots of excess money and need to burn some.
