    Proof of Residency

    Hey,

I went to my local Sportsmans Warehouse and wanted to buy a 10/22. The salesman told me that I need my Drivers License and a Proof of Residency such as a utility bill or vehicle registration.

I thought a secondary proof of residency was only for handguns? Shouldn't the DL alone be enough?

    Thanks

Why would ANYONE want to pretend there from California to buy a firearm?

Lol, I called them and made them show me the penal code that says I need to provide a secondary proof of residence. He called me back with the penal code that says that starting Jan 1st, 2014 all long guns will be sold the same way as handguns (something along those lines). I tried explaining to him that it means that long guns will now be registered, just like handguns. He couldn't tell me whether I was wrong or right so he's going back to the DOJ to get his facts straight. Supposed to get a call back on Monday.

This sucks that we have to tell our own FFL's what the laws are. Even thinking logically it wouldn't make sense. If someone is 18 and doesnt have a car or a utility bill how can they purchase a long gun? They unlawfully denied citizens the right to purchase a firearm.

      Good ol' California!

There is no PC for it. Property rights, their property their rules. If they want extra paperwork in their packet that is their business, if their customers want to comply or not, that is the customer's business. It is no different than the "No CCW" signs or the gun store owner who put up the "No Democrats" sign.

My brother was the one trying to buy a 10/22 but he didnt get his registration for BOTH his cars yet because the dealer was taking unusually long to transfer some paperwork, and utility bill he doesn't have because he doesnt have any under his name.

Regardless, what they're doing is wrong. They are not required a secondary proof of residence for long guns only handguns. He misinterpreted the part that says the information is stored the same for handguns and long guns, which simply means that long guns are now registered by DOJ just like handguns. He thought that they require the same registration process, which would also mean that long gun buyers would have to provide a safety certificate which doesn't exist (yet).

He said it was the law, not a store requirement.

He is probably either a salesman who is ignorant and thinks that is the law or he a salesman who lied to you because he doesn't want to explain.

Look at my driver license ...name address bar code all there. What else do you need ?
Perhaps next time I get pulled over I'll present my PG&E bill to the officer.

I live in the San Berdoo Mountains and have to have a PO Box due to snow removal. Of course my DL and registration show the PO and not a physical address. I went to AAA and had my registration amended to show my phys address along with my mailing address with a utility bill. It cost just under 20 bucks and has saved me many headaches.

I now have my mail sent to my office down in the flatlands but the amended reg will help to prove residency if I'm evacuated for fire, ect.

He was the manager, which makes it even more sad
