    Insured Firearms

Do any of you have your firearms insured? Just curious,
    why and why not?

Yup, just like anything of value. Considering many of my guns were purchased well below today's inflated values, it's good piece of mind to know that at least I would be able to recoup some of the costs if they were lost or stolen.

I have a Lockton policy through the NRA. I shopped for a comparable one to add to my State Farm policy, but NRA was slightly cheaper and I trust that they know how to handle a firearm claim better.

Generally you will pay 1% of the value of anything your homeowners insurance covers above the standard items. Wedding rings, jewelry, coins, cash, guns all account for "non included " policy items. If I insure a 10,000$ gun I would pay a 100$ premium(annually) to protect that gun. This is the standard and some might be a bit higher/lower

I'm insured through both NRA and AAA.

AAA renters insurance DOES cover firearms without a special addition to the policy in SOME places. You'll have to talk to your people to see. It seems like northern California offices do cover, while most southern ones don't?

I've got a $35K policy that covers everything I own, from my guns to my clothes to my quad, for about 12 bucks a month.

I've got the NRA insurance. My homeowners wants a list of them make/serial/extra $/etc to insure them - not willing to give them that info.

Insured through USAA on my renter's policy. Not very expensive and not only do they cover loss/theft, but any accidental damage to them. It is well worth the piece of mind to know that if anything goes wrong I'll be reimbursed.

I also keep up with and slightly overestimate the value on a couple "collectible" guns that are no longer manufactured because it would be a real shame for something to happen to those.

Yea, NRA would want a proof that you actually owned everything after the case. Which can be tricky!

NOT ALL RENTERS INSURANCE DOES THIS.
A majority of them require extra coverage for firearms and related equipment over a certain limit, usually somewhere near $2,000.

I've got AAA, and my particular policy does cover firearms up to the full value of the policy, but the majority of people who report renters insurance say that they had to do an extra addition to their policy to include full firearms value.

MAKE SURE YOU READ AND DOUBLE CHECK AND ASK QUESTIONS. Don't just assume that firearms are covered.

Other things that are generally NOT covered in full are jewelry, cash, gold and silver...the sorts of things you'd keep in your gunsafe anyway.

I'm insured through State Farm with a separate Personal Articles Policy compared to my homeowners and car policies. Well worth it IMO. Still shopping for better rates though.

If you have any sort of value then why wouldn't you have them insured??

I have a rider through Farmers..

Be aware that some mainstream insurance companies don't know squat about guns, or pretend that they don't, when it's time to settle a claim. For example, that Smith K-frame in excellent condition that you bought in 1996 for $300 will have depreciated (according to them) to well under a hundred bucks. Or that case of .308 you bought for $160 ten years ago, even though it's still in the battle packs and unfired, will "depreciate" to $32. Some adjusters use common sense when you demonstrate to them that used guns and unfired ammo go up in value over time, but some adjusters refuse to listen and keep their heads firmly up their butts.
