    Kid friendly indoor shooting range

I want to take my 8 year old to an indoor shooting range. We've gone to Haugges but never indoor. Anyone here ever taken their child to an indoor and where?

Yes, but I started mine at 10. 8 is a bit young, but if he/she is old enough to look over the railing and hold the gun - then you should be fine. On Target in Laguna Niguel is my home range. Very friendly.

Yeah he's a pretty tall kid and was able to handle an AR when we went a few weeks back... He had trouble with the recoil on my G22

.40 is a bit much for ANY new shooter, regardless of size

seriously, stick with renting or buying a .22 pistol and if you don't own one already, a .22 rifle

I like the Marlins myself if keeping it relatively stock, Ruger 10/22 if you like to modify your stuff

No reason to have him develop bad habits from shooting larger calibers when learning the basics

when he's gone through a few thousand rounds of .22 and can shoot them almost as accurately as you can...

then move him to the centerfire stuff

If I could go back, I'd train with .22s and save a LOT of money and be better faster.

Gregg Bouslog at On Target has a program for youth organizations. I would call them and discuss their policies, but I would expect them to be pretty open as long as there is an adult supervising the child and the child can safely and reliably follow instructions.

I teach scouts to shoot and we start cubs (7 to 10) with bb guns. It can be a challenge, but we get them through it safely and they all have a great time.

@ voiceofreason I should have been more specific when he shot my pistol... He only shot it a couple of time and no more than that. He did shoot an S&W 22 and had a blast with it. Hoping I can find an indoor range that has a 22 pistol we can rent

I like OC Indoor Range in Brea, CA. I have seen several kids shooting in the past and they have a good rental selection.

you should give them a call.

A lot of ranges require that the child be able to hold their arms straight over the top of the shooting bench. If they're too short, the bench will force them to aim higher, increasing the risk that bullets travel into the ceiling or target holder, and not into the backstop.
