Also, is this really the only realistic way to get a hold of a Magpul Lower Receiver?

There are several different types of Magpul AR receivers.

The more rare, the more desirable and expensive.

The S&W "Magpul" AR receivers are the most common because they are made by S&W, not Magpul.

Actual Magpul made stripped AR lower reciever will cost between $500-3000 (price range taken from sale prices on various auction sites) depending on the generation/markings.

S&W sells them as complete rifles.

You may get it as a stripped receiver, through a third party vendor or on the auction sites.
