I got asked this question by a friend...

ok, so i was asked a question yesterday by a friend of mine here on the ship. i couldn't think of the answer off hand so i'm bringing the question to the knowledgeable minds here on calguns.

    here is the situation...
he is a california resident. while we were stationed in mississippi he purchased a glock. well needless to say the ship is now here in california. does he have to register the pistol here? who does he have to inform that the pistol is now within state boundries if anyone?

i would think that with this being commifornia, he is going to have to inform someone that he has brought this god awful, evil black life taking item within the borders of this wonderfully evolved, well rounded, completely flawless nanny-state.

    Depends.

By 'stationed in Mississippi' do you mean he is active duty military, and had PCS orders to MS?

If yes to that, is he still on active duty?

Or has he separated in CA?

    Here's the deal:

Active duty with PCS orders to a state are citizens of that state for gun-buying purposes.

Active duty military with PCS orders to CA are NOT required to declare any of their guns to CA.

    See the wiki articles:

he lives here in california. we were on pcs orders to precommision this ship while it was being built in mississippi. so technically it was both. pcs from cali to mississippi with ultimate orders to pcs back here to san diego.

So, since he's not currently 'making CA his home' but rather is here at Uncle Sam's convenience, he need not report any guns he brings with.

When he separates, if he comes here to live, then he would report them all. But that's current law - by then, things may have changed.

The roster is just a restriction on FFL's on what they can sell non-exempt individuals out of their inventory, and a restriction on what home builders can make (SSE aside). The roster is not a restriction on guns you already own being brought to CA when establishing residence or travelling here.
