Young Oakley boy accidentally shoots himself and dies.

OAKLEY, Calif. — An 11-year-old Oakley boy has died after he was said to have accidentally shot himself Wednesday night.
The shooting was reported at 7:06 p.m. in the 1300 block of Yosemite Circle, Contra Costa County sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said.
He was pronounced dead a short time later.
The preliminary investigation by Oakley police indicates that the boy's gunshot wound was accidentally self-inflicted, Lee said.

It pains my heart when this type of accident/negligence occurs.

UPDATE: News now reporting that this may have actually been a suicide. Statement from the coroner. Apparently the young boy is a 6th grader and the shooting occurred after the boy had an arguement with his parents over a poor report card.

These kinds of stories should be left in a sticky for those who think it is ok to leave firearms unsecured around kids because of their irrational fear of needing arms length access to a gun at all times of the day or night.

The exact reason all of my firearms are locked up, and unloaded. If you don't have kids, that's one thing, but with kids in the house, keeping a loaded gun within reach is unacceptable.

Where did it say how he got the gun? My dad always hid the key to his cabinet & we always found it. 10-15 is a pretty curious age.

We never had any accidents, but we always "played" with the guns when he wasn't around. Dad taught us how to handle them safely, but he still kept them locked up.

Sure it is, that's why you take precautions. I'm sure if he knew you had been in there he would have kept the key on his person or hid it better.

These days there is no reason not to get a decent keypad combo safe. They even make ones with illuminated buttons now.

So sad. I hate hearing news like this.

My brother-in-law accidentally shot and killed himself, many years ago.

My kids now, I drill them on gun safety. They can recite basic safety when I ask them about it, although that doesn't mean they truly understand it. But I'm adamant in teaching it to them. I recently bought a Savage Rascal Youth .22 so I can take my kids to the range. Even if they don't show any interest in shooting, I want them to understand the danger and power in a gun, to respect it and know that it's not a toy. Every family should teach firearm safety, even if there are no firearms in the home.

All of my firearms are secured and the keys are not accessible to my children.

The some of the best firearms safety comes from taking it apart and cleaning it. Nothing brings understanding to the function of a firearm by getting into the guts and seeing how it actually works.

Very true. I can speak from personal experience on this one.
The 357 mag fragments in my left leg from the age of 3 tell the story.

And yes, Dad would have done some whoopin' had he know all the crap we pulled off as kids.
