    benjamin 392 or 397

my old man got me a pos air gun from walmart for xmas, we played around with it, and came to the conclusion it was junk. very inaccurate, and falling apart from its own recoil (scope became VERY blurry, along with other issues)

so walmart would only give us a gift card for its return since it was used, and it was past the 30day mark (even though i read they have a 90day return policy, receipt said nothing)

did some research and read good things about the benjamin rifles, and walmart sells them online, problem is the .177 is out of stock online, and no idea if and when it will come back in stock? they have the .22 version which is $14 cheaper then the 397. but unsure if the more expensive pellets, and if the slower fps would be acceptable 685fps vs 800fps, i dont really want to do hunting with it, just shoot it in the backyard mostly for when i get bored.

    what do you guys think?

If you want to spend a little more get the Discovery, otherwise the Ruger is a lot of gun for the money.

The ruger I originally got (blackhawk elite) was junk. Used several different pellets with not enough change in accuracy to matter. The recoil broke the scope, became insanely blurry. Every screw was loose on gun retightend about 10times.

For $98+tax seems like a oversized paperweight for the money. Whats the point when you cant hit a soda can 10yards across the backyard.

Read the benjis are a good gun. New ones need a little work like cleaning out the barrel because they get paint in them, and trigger needs some smoothingn out.

Just want to know if I should just settle with the .22 or wait for the .177 to come back into stock when and if ever it does

Spring piston guns (Ruger) need about 1000 rounds through them before they break in. Keeping a scope on a spring piston gun is very difficult. The guns will destroy even the best scopes. It's best to just use the open sights. For best performance the 177 is the standard for airguns, the larger bores are for guys that have more than one airgun. They do hit hard but the bullet drop is a ton.
Multi-pump pneumatics grow old really quick. The Benjis are good guns for their design but they can't compare to a good spring piston gun. Call the guys at http://www.pyramydair.com and they will sell you a good gun in your price range and help you get started.

well that ruger didnt have open sights and came with the scope, not even a way to add iron sights. id prefer the pumper style. id really like to get the .177, but who knows if they will get any more to sell online. prefer to use the walmart card since i never shop there. it would take years to use it.

These are not made by Ruger. I believe they are imported from China under the Ruger name by Umarex. Walmart is notorious for beating down their vendors on price, and in turn, the manufacturer is going to have to cut costs to meet that price point. I ave an old Diana made RWS 22 break action pellet gun. It's accurate, and not falling apart. As far as scopes, Chinese airgun scopes are generaly junk.

I have the 397. Great gun. I put the Williams rear peep sight on it and love it.

If you're just plinking, go with the .177. Pellets are 1/2 the cost of the .22
For hunting, the .22 still puts out 50% more PFE with only a 115fps reduction.
