    Lock purchase with new firearm

    Hello all!

I bought a new shotgun (Beretta A300) from a northern California shop. Its in DROS right now.

I know you are required by law to purchase a lock with the firearm or provide proof of a safe ownership. Or, if you purchase a lock, it must be CA approved and you must provide a receipt of purchase within the last 30 days.

I do IT for a Police Dept and they gave me the Project Childsafe cable lock for free in a sealed plastic bag.

My question: Does this lock qualify? Its CA approved, but I don't have a receipt as they are free from most Police departments.

The officers just said try it and see what happens, but I'd like to know if others have experience in this matter. I emailed the shop owner but he has yet to respond.

Generally when you get one from the PD to have it work they stamp a date on a business card or something for you so it has proof that its during the 30 day window.

There are a ton of threads on this...

Shops will always try and make you buy their locks. As far as proof of a safe you just sign an thing saying you have one and the brand name

Could I buy the lock, walk out, then return it you think? haha

I already bought the official Beretta case but it doesn't come with a lock. I already have a ton of pad locks...hence my question

Nice shotgun by the way, I see a lot of those in the pro shop at Coyote Valley Sporting Clay. Must be pretty popular for them to stock so many on their rack.

You're the IT guy for a Police Dept, I'm pretty sure you can some up with some official looking document that says you were issue with the Cable Lock within the last 30 days or something.

The cable lock is only $10.00 anyway, not worth the hassle of driving and returning the lock. Also, it is not a good idea to piss off your LGS, you may need their help later on in ordering something you really want later.

I just buy a gun lock from Wal-Mart on my way down to purchase a gun and then return it 10 days later on my way back from picking the gun up.

Doesn't the shotgun come with a lock?

I've bought a lock when I picked up a shotgun from a shop, walked out to my truck and secured my fnh then walked back in and returned the lock. Got a dirty look, but I couldn't care any less.

What's the deal with having to have purchased it in the last 30 days anyway? Like Turlock expires after 60 days or something

Even stupid administrative laws have to be followed.

I do the walmart return trick
