Looking to get into HAM radio and I was wondering if it was illegal to listen in car while I'm driving?

You would be fine listening in as long as you're not wearing headphones covering both ears to do it. You can also talk on a two way radio while driving as it's not treated the same as a non hands-free cell phone. -
There's exemptions for HAM radio operators.

Lot's of HAM's have units in their cars. I know one or two that have been has sealed for holding a handheld radio while driving even though it is legal. Many LEO don't know that it is legal.sigpic50BMGBOB aka 50BMGLAZARUS aka 50BMGZOMBIEBOB aka the UN- DEAD!Comment

My dad is a HAM. He would talk on his "net" every Sunday morning and our TV's would go fricken BIZIRK! Our neighbors used to get pissed when they were watching football and they start hearing aliens on their TV.
He has a 50ft tower in the backyard with huge antennas on it. Lots of old school tube amplifiers and lots of new stuff too. He used to be part of the MARS program too where he relayed patched calls and or messages to families in the bay area from service men over seas. The internet mostly handles that job now.Comment

The filters only seemed to help our neighbors and their effectiveness depended on how many watts he was transmitting with. There was nothing we could do about the TV's in our house as I think the interference was coming through the power. We could hear it on our phones and radios too.
I am still friends with one of my old neighbors (4 houses down) and we've had a few laughs about it a couple of years ago.Comment

My dad has a 4 digit license#. I think he got his license in the 60s.Comment

Two issues here:
First, it is fine to listen to the radio, but you must have a license to transmit. Of course, I'm assuming you have the license for the frequency you want to transmit in.
Second, if by listen you mean hold the radio in or around your face, I assume the police might pull you over. However, if you have an ear bud you can use, then you're find there too!Comment
