Fathers on the board, I'd like your input

My girlfriend has expressed an interest her own pink AK. She has helped my dad and I build ours, so its probably time I help her build one. She is 28, and lives at home still, well part time at her place and part time at my place. We go shooting often enough that I trust her to be safe with a firearm. I agreed to build her one, sort of. I actually said no, but the next one we build she won't know is hers until we paint it. I kind of want to suprise her.

But, I don't want to upset her parents. They know we go shooting together, her dad has even let me borrow his tools to do demils, and showed me how to refinish the wood. I don't think her mom would mind at all, but her dad might, he is the old crotchety set in his ways type. They don't have any firearms at home, but he regularly hunts rabbits and raccoons on his property with a pellet gun. He was also a retired Marine with over 20 years service.

So, what do you guys think. I haven't told her I would build, but I just ordered the parts to do it. I would like to talk to her dad about it before she brings home a rifle, but don't know how to bring it up. I think he'll shoot me down, but not because he doesn't want it around, but more because he'll think its a joke or that I'm not serious. I don't want to build it and then keep it in my safe and not tell them. If I build it for her, then its hers and she keeps it.

You've already ordered the parts.Build it and when You present it to her tell Her that You and/or Her have to get her Dads permission to keep it at His/Her home.

Dude, he did over 20 years in the USMC, that guy is crazy, don't give her a gun If my daughter came home with a gun that her boyfriend gave her, it would make things soooo much easier for me

No but really, she is 28 years old, give her the dang pink AK.

Talk to her dad and tell him that you already built it, you just wanted to get some of the relevent parts colored in pink to personalize it for her. Presume the close, in other words, expect him to be ok with it, especially since you "wanted his approval" before you gave it to her. If he disagrees with the idea, you're not out anything and you're on you way to another build for yourself. No one loses and at least you tried. It also shows that you respect him...

Send all the parts to me before you build it.

If the guy is a Marine and you want to respect him, build an AR instead.

Build the gun, and keep it at your place. Maybe the guy like guns, but
doesn't want them around his house for personal reasons.

No need to ask more, the consensus is yes.

I would ask first and early out of respect.

I keep EVERYTHING seperate. I don't even let her put her DVD's on my DVD shelf.

I'm not the marrying type and never will be. Its really just easier that way.

                      1. it sounds like you respect her parents
                      2. it sounds like you respect her parents home

if the above are true, then it's only right to include her parents in the process. if they say no, then you have earned their respect. it is their house and their rules. if they say yes, then you have still earned their respect.

As a Father, I would encourage her to find a more secure boyfriend. I want my daughter to be sure of a future, and a secure, strong husband to get there with her.

Don't care how much you may like her, nor how many guns you buy her. As a Dad, I care that she will grow old, happy, safe, and secure.

You only want it the easy way. The word for that, is self centered bum.

I shoot i have two boys. I have an older step daughter i consider my daughter though. She is 22, same time she has been shooting with me since she was 7. If she had a boyfriend that was well respectable, into shooting and building. Then built her a gun the only concern that i would have is that the gun operated correctly. As a parent i can tell you her parents already have an understanding of who you are. They already made a decision on weather they like you or not. From what it sounds like you have already earned there respect. I can tell you if my daughter was dating someone i wasnt fond of i wouldnt be helping them or loaning them any of my tools. Id either be too busy or im not too sure where that tool is. Or its not working correctly now.

So with that in mind. You dont have a problem with building her a gun. You need to make sure it works well and is safe. Thats their main concern. They already know you build guns. They already know you shoot. If they had a problem with that they would have already adressed that. When you take thier daughter shooting all they care about is her being safe.

Seems kinda harsh if he is up front with her about the topic. She may feel the same, never know. Besides, marriage is not for everyone.

You're asking the dads on this forum whether it's ok to have an AR built for their daughters? You might as well just go ahead and do it.
