HELP needed ??? Traveling with hand guns & ammo

When I go to the range I usually have my ammo and guns stored separately.

I was given a larger Pelican case and was wondering if it is legal to have a pistol and ammo (in factory ammo boxes) in the same pelican case if it is locked externally on the pelican case.

or

would it be legal if I had a smaller pelican case locked with ammo in it, inside of a larger pelican case with a few hand guns in it. then also lock the outside of the pelican case?

Only wondering about this for traveling within CA.

Legal as you describe, either way.

One lawyer member recently has opined that there is more risk inherent in that behavior than is commonly believed here.

As always, I am the doomsayer. But I have had my trunk searched and cases/ammo inspected on the way to the range and came out of it smelling like a rose, so I'm doing something right.

Me, personally, I lock the pistols in hardcases, the rifles are unlocked in soft cases(hard would be better), and the ammo is in an ammocan(unlocked, but locked would be better).

No loaded mags anywhere or inserted in magwells.

This is more than required. I do this because I cannot afford to fight a case or get arrested or have my car impounded. If I could, maybe I would try to get away with the bare minimum.

Since this is CA, and CA hates guns and gun owners, I will grudgingly go the extra mile so hopefully a police officer will find nothing he thinks is illegal and arrest me.

I also gave them permission to search, for the above reasons. Refusing a search is not a get out of jail free card. I've talked to cal gunners who refused, and it cost them thousands of dollars.

That's just me though. Just because something is technically legal if I take it to court, doesn't mean it's smart, or that I won't get arrested for it. YMMV.

I'm in another state at the moment and people can't believe that I would need to tell anybody to be extra careful about transporting firearms in CA. Everybody knows how careful you have to be in CA but Californians!
