Some thoughts on AK's?

Great rifles, but what are you going to do with it? If it's just to beat around and throw lead down range, you might be better served with a WASR or OPAP or something, and spend $600 on ammo and parts.

Well like I said, they are probably some of the best built AKs out there, and command a premium because of it.
Function is basically the same as other AKs though, so the premium wouldn't be worth it *for me*, but I doubt many people have regretted buying a VEPR.
I'd get one in 54R just to be different.

No way would I pay $1,250 for an AK especially when the same gun with different furniture is $699. Personally I prefer the slant receiver and stock set Very easy to make featureless. which I prefer for AK's.

The gun is the same. Vepr has used two different receivers square and slant. Atlantic even sells unfinished veprs that are meant to have their stocks replaced.

if its for your collection, then go for it. if it is just for plinking around, id go with something cheaper. I recently got a romy g on a nodak receiver, and im perfectly happy with her ;p

The total cost of the RED Vepr Rifle conversion parts and the gun are around $1100.00 we charge $1250.00 so $150 to do the conversion work , fit the stocks , install the guide test fire and warranty the rifle. Sorry folks we are not getting rich on the gun and we do offer base Veprs starting @ $699.00 if you want to tackle it on your own. No matter what Vepr you end up getting they are dynamite rifles !! Really accurate and some of the nicest AK rifles we offer on a side note they are a tad bit heavy around 9 pounds approx.

I didn't vote since I don't have that model; but if it is like my 223 vepr (mine is really accurate) yes.

So yes; I'd buy that rifle for that price if I were looking for one in that caliber.

You're paying something for looks but they probably have them unconverted for less if that isn't worth it for you.

Thanks for the help guys, and thanks jbook for the links, I'm gonna look more into this option for sure. Just one last question, and I'm afraid the answer might be too technical for me to understand. Why the $500 price difference if it's just different furniture and a handguard and gas tube swap?

The Atlantic Russian red VEPR is a full conversion meaning it will take standard AK mags and has a bullet guide installed. The reason for this is VEPR's use proprietary mags limited to 10 rounds. For most of us in CA this does not matter we are limited to 10. So unless you have a stockpile of standard capacity AK mags this conversion is not needed. They have also removed the thread protector on the barrel and installed a brake. Here is another thought the the fully converted VEPR from Atlantic will not come with any mags because they cannot be shipped to CA. So you are paying for something you will not receive. The standard VEPR will come with 2. If I were you I would be doing the stock and pistols grip conversion myself and stick with the VEPR mags. I would call Atlantic and ask if they will be getting any Square back veprs in anytime soon otherwise you would need to use the adapter. Here is a link to handguard bracket and gas tube. choose whatever stock set and brake you want either way the additional parts add up to about $200-$250 and you can sell the original stock and handguard if you want.

Okay so I wasn't aware of the whole magazine compatibility thing. So on the vepr redwood for $1250, does atlantic firearms file the mag catch and add a bullet guide in so it can use standard 30 round ak mags? Once it's converted to accept standard mags, do vepr/saiga mags no long work with it? Thanks again for the help

I have the Arsenal Sam7r-61c.

It is on the higher end of the AK scale, but I LOVE it.

I handled a VEPR today and I really liked how solid it felt. With that said, the VEPR will probably be my next AK.

I dont think you can go wrong either route.
