Heirloom

I would like to purchase a bolt action rifle so I can hand down through the years and become a heirloom I was thinking in 308. But is open to other calibeds, any ideas?

.338 Lapua Magnum or .300 Win Mag

For heirloom rifle, I'd go with McMillan Tac 338 or Accuracy International AWM. Great rifles.

Not a traditionalist in the wood and metal rifle sense personally. I like the tactical stuff. You'll get more traditional responses too if that's your direction.

Pre-64 Winchester Model 70, or possibly a U.S. made Weatherby Mark V with some gorgeous wood. 30-06 would be my first choice.

This would be my choice in a Bolt-Action rifle...a Winchester, pre 1964 in .30-06.

Hwve you looked at ammo costs and availability of 338 lap, even components ,ridiculous and completely useless for shooting . Are you a desert long range sniper? Special forces or Special Needs?

Go with a common caliber, that is an easy choice. Or pay $5 a round. ..and have no 2,000+ yd range to shoot at.

The comments were not directed to you medic. But tactical to practical is not .338 or hell any of those "wildcat" I would call them.

Buying a 338 lap for a pass down heirloom is ridiculous.
A rem 700 in.308 in a sweet wood /inlayed /engraved stock is good to go.

Ammo will be easy to get and if they want to hand load you can..if not buy bulk. That rifle will last last generations....so will the ammo

If you choose to go battle sniper get a heirloom guille suit too!

Trust me medic, my go to rifle is a fnfal sar48 . Im no deer hunter or paperpuncher at 2,000 m. I like to make steel plates sing at 1-2-300 yds with 20 round mags of 762 nato

I like this idea but in a 308. Listen, it's not the 1800s when a gun would cost you a years pay. It's just another tool, like a shovel or a drill motor. So if you want to have something valuable a couple of generations from now, you'll need something that is valuable now.

The ammo costs are not a concern, I wont be using The rifle unless hunting with my little one, who I'd like to pass it to. I just want to consider all my options and opinions

Why stop at just one heirloom? Problem solved. The only thing cooler than one family firearm heirloom is multiple firearm heirlooms!

It mite just be me, ( old school ) but plastic an Heirloom don't really go together.

If you got the time and have set aside some cash for this. Just keep looking.
If wood is the game, then keep looking, make them pull all the stock they have in back (if you can) as not all wood is Equal as most will attest here.

A good common cal is smart that's for sure.

When you see that one piece (rifle) your gonna know that's it.
If you fall in love with it, your next inline will also...
