Im moving out to cali finally and going to Utah. Since the bullet button is not required in the state of Utah i'm going to replace it with regular magazine catch assembly. My question is how to remove the bullet button from Ruger SR-556.I email to Ruger about this and Ruger responded that the modification of there California bound firearms are not done by Ruger. They shipped it in the original configuration. I tried to remove the nut inside the bullet button using an allen wrench remove the magazine catch assembly but the magazine catch button still stock.I read online to apply heat to remove the locktite. My 2nd question is is the bullet button is made of aluminum or polymer i don't want to fry it and cause more headache to myself if it made from polymer or the bullet button has been modified inside.

The bullet buttons I have seen/used were all aluminum. That being said the nut on the inside that threads onto the mag catch has a notch cut into the top and an allen wrench won't get the job done. See if you can get your hands on a 'wonder wrench', this will make removal of the nut much easier. Once that is out, you should be able to remove the spring and bullet button body. -
You're not going to melt the aluminum. Just place the tip of a soldering iron on it long enough to loosen the loctite and then remove it while it's still hot. They should have used blue loctite and the removal temperature for that stuff is 482f.Oppressors can tyrannize only when they achieve a standing army, an enslaved press, and a disarmed populace. -- James Madison

When I move out of state, I'm going to stop a few feet outside the CA border, remove the bullet button, and drop it inside the CA border as a final 'farewell'.Originally posted by DRHI think Claire Wolf said it best as "America is at that awkward stage. Have you looked around?
