Which .22 should I buy? Help please!

I want to get my girlfriend a 22 to try and interest her in shooting. she has shot before but isn't hooked, "yet!"

I don't want to step up to a Ruger on this one. Would like to keep it more bank account friendly- at least for now.

Both the Savage Arms 64 tactical .22LR & the Marlin 795 are both on sale for the same price: $160 @ Big 5.

which rifle do you think is the better choice and why?

    Thank you for your thoughts.

Check out all three at the shop
    IMO
Neither one of those hold a candle to the ruger 10/22
Look at it this way (if she hates it) you still have a nice rifle.

If you are trying to convince her and think this will happen by buying a cheap gun you might be barking up the wrong tree. Buy her something that is ultra reliable and will be fun to shoot. If she likes pink, find it in pink. If you win this battle, you are golden. If you lose it, you may never get another chance.

If not hooked on a rifle, how about a .22 pistol?

          Change the dynamics a bit.

            Everybody should own a 10/22.

I agree that if she doesn't like it then you've got yourself a great rifle. Not a bad consultation prize.

My wife and I both have Marlin 795s. We use them for plinking and have a blast doing it. They are reliable and eat most ammo except for Remington bulk packs, those tend to have a misfire or two every few magazines. CCI ammo works best in them. They don't have the aftermarket support like the 10/22 does, but all I needed on mine were the tech sights.

Here's an in-depth review of the Marlin 795 by nutnfancy:

The Appleseed folks have a high opinion of the Marlin 795 . The weekend Appleseed clinics shoot at least 400 rds and if the rifle was not reliable, accurate and durable it would show up at these weekend clinics.

IIRC Appleseed instructors have loaner rifles available for attendees who need a rifle to attend a rifle clinic.

You may want to explore the Appleseed forum and even borrow a rifle before making a purchase .

Other than the above, I would suggest any self loader or even bolt gun that takes a detachable mag.

Unless your running a trap line, the tube fed models are less desirable .
                  My 2 cents.

I have a high opinion of the 795 as well.

Ruger 10/22 if you want options to go absolutely bat crazy on mods.

Ruger 795 if you don't plan on doing more than a scope or red dot.

CDNN usually has good prices on mags for them.

The iron sights on the 795 aren't all that great/borderline useless if they're "off", is the only complaint I have against them.

Ruger 10/22 is a great rifle, just more expensive if you don't change anything. Sights aren't great either, just a LOT more options to turn it into something you would not recognize as a 10/22.
