    Christmas Drama

Visiting my wife's parents in oregon over Christmas. I challenged my brother in law to a 22 shoot off in the back property. He grew up on Mt Hamilton, shooting with his dad from the front porch. He was excited then, it happened. His new wife, laid into him about not wanting guns around "her family." Sending him out to tell HIS DAD and myself that that behavior is not acceptable.

Her family consists of their newborn and a 15 year old cousin that she brought up "last minute."

This was after she questioned having our kids play together, after I told them they're should find another church.

This has just excited me more to teaching my girls to shoot. (My girls 5,4, and 4) I think I am going to frame a used target in their room, so they can show their friends and of course her........

Play nice. Try to gently show her the light...

If she doesn't come around...tell your BIL that he needs to find a better woman.

If she doesn't like guns, she probably sucks at making a sammich too!

If you bring the guns to the shoot instead of having your brother in law get one for himself, does this solve the problem?

I would recommend that you don't create conflicts in the family, it has repercussions that will affect the next generation. Instead of happy childhood memories for your girls playing with their cousins, those memories will now be angry ones about your sister in law yelling at you, getting angry with her husband and teaching her kids how to hate you, the gun totting baby killing world peace threatening uncle.

      Not a happy place man.

Worse yet, one of the guys that works for me sold his gun because his "soon to be" wife doesn't like guns. I can't even look him in the eye anymore. Truly pathetic that he's ok with that....makes me insane.

I've had that happen many times. Someone blows up and goes off about how they're dangerous, kill people, only criminals have them, blah blah blah.

I don't argue too hard on their points and try to show them how wrong they are. Usually it pisses them off and makes them dig their high heels in harder.

Believe it or not, agreeing with them takes the wind out of their fight quick. Of course I follow it up with the fact that they are dangerous in the wrong hands, and that's not who they are dealing with today.

What I do is tell them that when I handle firearms, I'm as safe as can be and that safety is observed before anything else. We aren't out to kill anything (when target shooting) unless it's an orange clay or paper target. Eye/ear protection first for the young ones or they don't even get to get near them.

After my safety/we-are-not-going-to-kill-anything-today speech, that usually calms them down. I tell them that they are welcomed to watch and are in no way forced to or obligated to participate. When they see the fun of it all starting to come out and no one is getting hurt, that's when they start to come around.

                    As to the OP:

Let the lady cool off and the approach the matter in a civil manner. If she continues to act like an idiot, I'm sure one way or another, she'll find herself the "family" she wants.

I know a female who married a guy and the guy took her gun and turned it into the police dept when she wasn't home. I told her to go out and buy a better one than she had before She said it wasn't worth the fight. Husband believes in a no guns in the house rule. I guess they didn't talk about that subject prior to saying "I do".

A woman making a scene at a family Christmas get-together.. gee, who would of thought that possible.

Your brother-in-law should of told her to get back in the kitchen and make him some pie.
