    Going to California

I live in NM and am planning a visit to northern CA in Feb. We will be dragging our camp trailer and staying along the way at campgrounds. While there we will be staying with family, or maybe out on the coast somewhere. I would like to bring a handgun and maybe a .22 rifle or shotgun. What do I need to know to stay out of jail? Thanks for any info, advice and wisdom.

Hope you enjoy your visit here, I suggest you leave your standard capacity magazines (10+ rounds) at home since it's illegal to possess them.

Don't bring mags over 10 rounds, check the flowcharts up at the top of the page.

Most handguns are fine(note that I said "most") as long as you don't have a threaded barrel. See the flowchart for details(since you didn't say what kind of handgun, for all I know you mean an AR pistol).

Pump shotguns are fine, even most semi auto shotguns are fine, but check the flowchart at the top of the page anyway just to be sure.

.22lr rifles aren't "assault weapons", however CA measures overall length with the stock folded/collapsed vs. the feds who do it unfolded/extended. If your .22lr can still be shot while it's under 26", don't bring it. If it cannot be fired under 26", it's fine.

Thanks for the responses so far.

The handgun I would bring would be a 9mm or .45 semi auto, 7 round mags. The .22 would be a Ruger 10/22 with 10 round mags.

One thing I need clarification on is transporting the guns while I'm traveling. I've heard that the guns and ammo need to be locked up, ammo separate, and other things like that. I would probably leave the rifle in the camp trailer while traveling. I would like to have the handgun in the truck with me. What are the rules?

In NM you can carry a loaded handgun or long gun in your vehicle and not have to hide it or disable it. You can also carry it openly on your person just about anywhere. So I'm not used to having to hide my guns or disable them when traveling. Very different culture here. More info and advice, please.

Being 9mm or .45 semi auto with 7 round mags doesn't tell me anything. Read the flow chart, answer the questions as they apply to your handgun.

A ruger 10/22 with 10 round mags is fine as long as it's over 26".

Ammo does not have to be locked up separately(doesn't even have to be locked up. You can keep it in the same case with the gun, or leave it rolling around on your dash if you want), but the guns do need to be unloaded.
