Is it possible to transfer a 1911 lower as a rifle. I thought about taking a 1911 or 2011 lower and purchasing it to later be built into a rifle. I could use this kit to make it a rifle before making it into a pistol. I want to avoid the SSE for now so I can avoid having to have a complete functioning firearm at time of DROS. I believe once a pistol always a pistol. However if it begins life as a rifle does it need to be part of any list? If I manufacture a pistol from a rifle isn't the pistol exempt as homebuilt from the drop test. Please fill in the holes in my theory.

You can't turn a rifle into a pistol in this state. That's why stripped lowers can't be built into AR pistols. -
this is actually a really good question. I would also like to know if a pistol frame can be DROS'd as a rifle. I already have a Glock Mech Tech carbine, and would love to be able to build another one without having to purchase a whole 'nother pistol just to get the frame.
It would be great if it would be possible to DROS a pistol frame as a long gun with the intention that it would never become a complete pistol.Comment

My advice would be to buy a Rock Island GI for as low as possible (used?), sell the complete slide on eBay ($150ish, a tactical slide would bring in more say $200). I got in the Rudius 80% group buy to make my MechTech, I'm close now but it has been long time coming.Comment

I don't believe there is any law preventing a pistol frame from being DROS'd as a rifle lower, but as others have said, in CA you can not turn it into a pistol once it's been a rifle.Comment
