School me about Buying Gun Certificates...

On occasion I see people selling their Gun certificates like from Glock where you can redeem the certificate from Glock USA for any of their model line except the G18 and they will send it to your nominated FFL for transfer.

What are the other caveats/costs expected to be incurred when buying a certificate? I just want to determine if the asking price for the certificate is fair and worthwhile or if the cost of going that route is no different to buying a new Glock from a local dealer.

My assumptions would be that I would be limited to G3's since I live in California and I would need to pay local Sales Tax at MSRP?

Are there any other costs/caveats I need to know about..?

So I will need to pay Tax at what value - the MSRP (which I can't seem to find from the Glock site?) .

Also the out of state Dealer transfer fee (like $75-$100 range)?

Since there are some Dealers that selling new Glocks in the high $400 to low $500 ranges it looks like the asking price for a Glock cert will need to be in the low $350 range to make it worth the hassle..?!

Not really worth it unless you win one or a buddy sells you one dirt cheap. Tax and dealer transfer will kill any savings.

Yeah, I agree with you there.

At least now I know if I chance upon a someone selling one, I can easily commit since I now know the value of the certificate now...

Honestly, in CA, because you get stuck with the highway robber FFL transfer fees your dealers seem to think are fair, ( I live in AZ and have never paid more than $20 for an FFL transfer) I wouldn't pay more than $400 for a GSSF Gun certificate. In a free state where you could get a Gen4, and you won't get raped on a transfer, I would easily pay $450 for one.

In fact, that reminds me, I saw one for sale on backpage earlier, might be worth checking out.
