    My First Time in Jail

Just completed a PPT. A friend of mine is giving me his 1911 .45 and Ruger "Security Six" .357. We did the deal at City Arms in Pleasant Hill.

I'll tell you, I feel crappy about this. I don't like people touching my stuff, and I especially don't like people touching my guns. But it had to be done.

Should I be worried? I'm having paranoid fantasies of the store staff mishandling the pieces and scratching them up, or maybe taking parts off of them and replacing them with cheap-o bits.

    This stinks. I hate jail.

next time, bring it in a gun case, and after they are done with the paperwork, prior to locking the gun up, LOCK the gun in the case. Problem solved.

There has been accidental drops and what not. It suck but its the law.

Im sure the firearms will be safe if you went to a reputable shop.

The guns are not in hard cases, nor are they locked, but they are in gun rugs, zippered closed. I did not know that I could lock them up.

City Arms came recommended on this forum. Furthermore, I can think of no reason why they, or any dealer, would mess around with other people's guns. Even if, out of stupidity, they did it once or twice, such things would get around the internet pretty quick and ruin their reputation.

Nevertheless, I am a little worried about the outside chance of something going wrong. Perhaps I worry too much.

The guys at City Arms are good people. Doing business with them for a few years and never had any issues. Wouldn't give it a second thought.

There is nothing to worry about. Many of us here have put $5k plus guns in jail numerous times with no incident. You're all good

No you are not good. Go back to that store and demand they give you back your gun now. If it is a virgin, shame on you for leaving it there unsecured!

You worry too much, but as I mentioned, you can always LOCK IT IN A CASE prior to handing it over for storage.

They never allow me to do this..If they get audited they will need access

Locking it in a case sounds like good advice, but I haven't noticed that gun shops are known for being friendly, accommodative and welcoming. In any case, it's too late to do anything now. We'll just have to see how it goes.

I second this. They are good people over there. You should be fine. Been doing business there for a while with no issues.

The gun rug idea is good, I'm not sure you could get away with the locked case idea at most places. Pretty sure they have to have access for serial numbers and such in case they get audited.

^^Thanks again for your thoughts on this, drkphibr. It eases my mind.

As I said above, I don't see why any dealer would give much of a damn about other people's guns. Furthermore, gun people generally are pretty respectful sorts. It's just that I was raised in a culture where it's better not to give people a chance to be stupid. In this case, I did what I could based on the information that I had, and there's only one way to do a legal transfer. So, we'll see. Everything will probably be fine.

Plenty of stupid people out there, but a good gun shop knows better than to mess with another guy's guns.

My LGS is way too busy to go nosing around other people's guns anyway. They have stacks and stacks of guns in boxes they have to go through to find your gun when you come back for it. I'd hate to be there when they go through an audit, but they are very fastidious about the paperwork, so I highly doubt that they every have paperwork issues. Just a bit of a mess with the guns themselves.
