Ak-47 help

Ok so I'm new to the whole AK scene and I'm interested in building or buying an Ak47. Can someone gimme a little education on owning one. Where the best place to buy one and what I can and can't do. I'm looking to build an original looking one not a tactical one. Thank you for any help I can get.

They are like most any other rifle except.

You'll need a mag lock

surplus ammo is cheap but most ranges won't let you shoot projectile with steel in it.

Most surplus ammo is corrosive but that is easy to deal with.

If it ever breaks that'll be a shocker.

Stupid fun to plink with but not a bullseye rifle.

I doubt you will ever regret an AK47.

Building one is a lot harder than an ar. It's a whole afternoon and more so if you plan on parkerizing it. Find a build party.

I have seen/ worked on one very bad case of guy drilled most holes in wrong places. Rifle still shoots

Easiest way is to go to a good gun shop and buy an AK off the shelf. You dont have to worry about any extra work as they already come with maglocks installed.

Second way is to find an AK online from a CA friendly vendor (Atlantic arms, personalsecurityzone) and ship it to a FFL who is willing to do a transfer.

Cheapest guns are Century arms WASRs, followed by Saiga conversions and Yugo aks.

Its probably the easiest common EBR to go featureless without a mag lock, as generally you just need to deal with the pistol grip (grip wrap, etc).

Or just stick with a stock Saiga. Featureless is easy, and factory 10 round mags are cheap. If you never change anything you don't have to worry about 922r.

Buy one from a Ca friendly online store and ship it to FFL locally (Atlantic Firearms is great!) O PAP, N PAP, Maadi...or Saiga Sporter= NO mag lock!! May have a hard time finding a used one in your area as they are getting pretty scarce.

That's pretty scary because 3rd hole, which I won't elaborate on, can bring ATF.

Find a build party. It will roughly set you back 900 or so these days that I know of. Only cost 550 a couple years ago. No registration involved and you learn the gun inside out. Very easy to build and you'll have hands on guidance from the build team. Everything will be built properly as well. I've seen plenty of crap off the shelf. I'm on my third build and would never buy an off the shelf AK anymore.
